AMVs in college applications

I know that this is probably a really really stupid question, but I have to know. I'm in my senior year of hs and am applying to colleges and whatnot, but I unfortunately don't have many special abilities or extracurriculars. I want to put video editing down as an ability, but I have nothing to show for it but AMVs. Would that be a really dumb thing to do or would it help at all?

.. having the ability to Understand and Utilize Video Editing Software holds no value to any College Criteria unless .. you can show how it can be used by Video Production ( Broadcast Engineering ) and/or in Advertising ( showing a Cough falling on a car whose alarm won't stop waking-up the neighborhood ) plus have Good Grammer and Punctuation on the Theme of your Application.

I don't think it would be as useful as an <i>ability</i> per se as it would be as evidence of a creative streak. I've always been under the impression that demonstrating an ability to express oneself creatively helps one stand out to the people who have to read college apps.

I know other people here have worked AMVs into their college apps somehow and had it help them; I just don't remember who-all they are.

I successfully used it to demonstrate the many understandings of musical theory I held; but I was applying to be a music major, and I'm not sure it really did help me at all. I figure my abilities to conduct, compose, and play two instruments had a lot more to do with getting in than any proof of musical prowess through editing ability...

If you're applying to any sort of media school absolutely send some in. I did, and I have no doubt they helped me.

If they´re well made and you show that you "know" what you do:
-Writing a pdf that explains what the video is about and how to handle the CD and video file (+technical details +video content). Write down wich programs you used for it. I mean don´t forget stuff that shows your technical knowledge like Avisynth, DGIndex, BeSweet...
-Make GOOD (I mean optical perfect) encodes. With a good filesize/ressolution/other things ratio. It shows that you know the technical stuff.
-Make an XviD avi and a x264 mp4. It shows that you know how to encode too.
-Don´t forget to burn codecs you need to play the files on the CD (vlc player...).

You show with all of this little things that you already have experience, knowledge and that you can work professional.

It´s all about how good you can sell yourselve.

I've applying for college this year too, and I tried to intergrate it (it being my video editing and compression knowlege) into my admissions essay of my many talents, but I skipped the whole "ripping footage from copyrighted videos & using & distributing music across the world" part. I'll let you know how it goes.

Just write an essay about the remix culture and use AMV's as the example you chose to take a look into. Or, if you really want something original, get out that dv cam and shoot a music video. A little harder to pull off, but well worth it. And also, don't get caught up in the idea that college wants you to do any specific thing...college is for figuring out what you want to do, so don't let anybody tell you that you can or can't do something.
