The Attitudes Of AMV Creators...

you're making your own damn media, i'm talking about people who take songs and anime, put them together, and see what happens. sure, they edit some things, but other than that it's not what you wanted at all; it's what you're stuck with. dbz amvs are usually blessed with this, although it's not nearly that bad when you've got constant action scenes.
i specifically said that i would love to see the people that make their own content for amvs. whether you figured out that i didn't know that such people were here or thought you'd take it upon yourself to be an ass, i have no idea. please, if you're going to call me incorrect, make sense of what i had to say before the fact.

If defending what I do is being an ass then I'm an ass.
I'm merely correcting the fact that you made vast generalisations about amv creators saying that's it's just " the ability to show off. " I really don't see any examples of people making videos to show off, with the possible exception here and there.

David Violence's Automated Reason is a good AMV to bring up in this discussion. His friend generated the music used in the AMV. I have a friend that does similar work (although a bit more hardcore techno than the song used in AR). The point is that it was a cool concept to use original music for the video. If he had animated the content himself, although extremely tedious, it would've been completely original (excusing borrowed ideas because, as Chef pointed out in that episode of South Park, most every idea is borrowed from somewhere).

God willing, when my brother's band finally records their new song, my video will mix some original live-action footage (shot with the assistance of Nightowl), and maybe some anime and/or original CG. But I would still consider it an evolution of my AMV work -- anyone is free to break the bounds you speak of, Kamoc, and many people do, in subtle ways that you might not be able to notice. You might be watching a video that you think is just video + footage, when in fact, maybe there's a massive amount of scene compositing and audio altering that you don't even know about. The creator has succesfully broken those bounds, and their success is in the fact that you don't know about it.
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

absolute, i have a bad time explaining things to you, let alone trying to count your own contradictions.
"I really don't see any examples of people making videos to show off, with the possible exception here and there."
okay, one. if you don't see any examples, then DON'T NAME ANY. a 'possible exception' IS AN EXAMPLE. 'here and there' are EVEN MORE EXAMPLES RELATING TO THE POSSIBLE EXCEPTIONS.
everything's a vast generalization. especially when the entire topic is based off of one. monkey see, monkey do. you ass.
besides, i'm not attacking what you do when what you do is completely different then what i'm talking about. you're creating your own view of the anime and putting it to (i'm guessing here) your own music. that's incredible, original, and remarkably different then what the topic is discussing. so sue me if generalizing that people who use already existant anime with already existant music are making music videos.

ever heard of the exception that proves the rule?
I have seen one person say that they make amvs for praise but that is only one person. I didnt name names because it's not appropriate.
What you are describing is everyone who isnt me (presumably) being a shit beacuse they are feeling inferior at their lack of actual creative ability. I don't see this to be true.

sorry kusoyaro, you posted right after i did. didn't get a chance to read that.
i was thinking about doing that same thing, making an original song and mix it with live footage.. basically film people jumping on a trampolene in the back yard and banging on window pains. that sounds so cool, but.. oh yeah, that's a music video. classic original stuff. AMVs are not original. they're filler. they simply disguise the fact that you've watched what they're showing you with a simple audio track (although it is quite fun to do).
look people, i don't know if you got it yet, but i'm talking about classic AMVs. not real music videos (original music, original content). you get what they made. you don't decide what you use, you shuffle through a vat of media already constructed for you, regurgatate it, and expect people to shout 'hooray!' when you drill it into their skulls. i never said that they can't be good, some videos i've seen are really good, but they're just not original. that's the point i'm trying to make (although i tried to do so subtly).
wow, we really got off topic.

so.. we're supposed to magically assume that this magical person was magically here and there at the same time and posseses two magical names?AbsoluteDestiny wrote:..with the possible exception here and there.
since when did you become poster boy to everyone you aren't? okay, 2.AbsoluteDestiny wrote:What you are describing is everyone who isnt me (presumably) being a shit beacuse they are feeling inferior at their lack of actual creative ability. I don't see this to be true.

Well, I direct and edit professionally, so I suppose I'd be one of those people who creates their own stuff... Aside from the numerous short films, corporate commercials, and music videos I've worked on, I do AMVs. Why? Because I want to show off? Nah, if I wanted to do that, I'd truly be a pretentious asshole, rather than an annoying asshole. I make anime music videos because I like to hone my skill as an editor. When I'm not working, I'll do an AMV. It's actually how most professional editors are trained - they're given video or film work previously created (mostly found footage) and are told to edit a coherant scenario utilizing said footage. It's a fun excercise, and fairly similar to the AMV world (only in the case of training, you're learning from a proven professional).Kamoc wrote:and i'd love to see some of these people who create their own music videos. that's true originality for you. i sure don't know of anyone on this board who does the same, but i'm willing to know. so sue me for not knowing.
Just thought I'd throw that out there. I actually have no idea what the current conversation is about, that paragraph just caught my interest.
Oh, and this:
Hee : ) I like bunnies. A lot. Though you have to keep in mind, Ian, that no one cares that I exist on the forum other than a few of you good people out there in this fun world we call a hobby - I can understand if Kamoc has never seen my little indulgence. But I like bunnies. Yes I do.AbsoluteDestiny wrote:Also, when people create videos using custom created 3D dancing bunnygirls, in what way are they limited by their source?
Oh, last little general comment - I most definitely believe AMVs can be an art form. They can also be entertainment. Both sides can be good. Let's see... what other industries out there fit that mold?
