"Manga Conquers America" - Wired
re: Otaku back in the national headlines on the cover of the November issue of Wired.
Ten-page manga here, "A History of Manga in America".
Extended article here. Although the focus is on manga, they can't avoid the influence of anime; e.g. the suggestion that anime's popularity contributed to the return and resurgence of manga in the U.S. There is also an extended discussion (& interview with Clamp) about doujinshi and its part in "remix culture".
There are additional links on that second page leading to related topics.

To be honest, I was reading the manga before I got into anime or AMV's. Though I could see where this is pertianant and true.TaranT wrote:re: Otaku back in the national headlines on the cover of the November issue of Wired.

That's nothing, in the September 2007 issue of the French edition of National Geographic, the cover story is about manga culture in Japan. For reals.
