newbie here with a couple questions

Post by pseudosaiyan » Wed Nov 07, 2007 10:56 pm

heya, i know somewhere these questions have been asked and answered multiple times before so bear with my ignorance. with that said here goes...

1. ive got .mp4 & .mkv flies that ive been unable to open in either sony vegas 7 or adobe premiere pro. are there any programs to convert these files to formats that are usable in either program?

2. if so, any tips on where to get them & how to use them?

3. i keep seeing "DirectShowSource()" in posts concerning converting files, would it help at all with my problem & how do you use it effectively?

4. if there is/are program(s) that can convert the files to a usable format are there any tips on keeping the quality of the video source? (not too interested in keeping the audio)

sorry if im just bringing up old topics
thanks in advance for any help

A1: Virtualdub (or VirtualDubMod) and avisynth work very well for this...but it's best if you use dvd footage

A2: they're both in the amvapp, which is found in the new eadfag (or the old one...but the new one has lotsa nice stuff)

A3: yep, Directshowsource() is what you'll be using to frameserve your files via avisynth into vdub(/mod)

A4: use a lossless codec like huffyuv or lagarith (both should be in the amvapp)
Lossless means big, so you won't want to re-encode entire episodes with them.
Instead, you should make small clips and encode those with a lossless codec.

on the off-chance that you haven't seen this pic yet, here's how to make small clips with vdub(/mod)

then go to file->save

use those to mark the beginning and the end of the "clips" you want so you can save room

Instead of DirectShowSource, use FFmpegSource. It's frame accurate, DirectShowSource isn't.
