I need help codecs

i have noticed that A LOT! of videos are now going .mp4 my computer will not play these types of videos.. I have downloaded divx and 3ivx. Divx i know of 3ivx was suggested by someone else.. these videos STILL will not play.. so what i want to know is there a software out there that i don't know about that will defiantly play these fomats?

CCCP, which will also allows you to play .mkv and .ogg should you run across them

i have CCCP installed on my computer since i prefer it to VLC
but i installed VLC on my usb so i can take the videos with me and not have to worry about not being able to watch them (mostly at uni during breaks ><)

personally i dont have cccp i use vlc because in a pinch you can also use it to do some wonderful conversions if you know what you are doing

I've always liked VLC, but have realized recently (by watching groups who put their stuff out in mkv) that the subtitle support in VLC sucks.
