I got in a 3 car pile up because someone slammed their brakes for some reason a few cars ahead, I stopped in time, then a SUV hit me, then a honda hit the SUV, luckily my tires were turned towards the shoulder from when I stopped or I'd have hit the car in front of me, and they woulda hit another im sure. Instead I went flying of the road. Afterwards in the police report the SUV driver says she hits me then the honda hits her. The insurance agent later tells me that the honda hit the stopped SUV hard enough to hit me off the road (HA!), and I tell them thats not what happened, and she even said otherwise on the police report. They then (after trying to make me say its the honda's fault) say oh I guess we will have to wait on the report (which takes weeks) Even after the report comes out they make me wait even longer -_-" It's really annoying. And that's a clear cut case, your's is more difficult heh, good luck >:P

What picture are you looking at? I see 3 cars to the right of him, he's not "stuck between four other cars", and your assuming there are no cars in front and back because he didn't draw every single car on the road? If that happened to me I'd only remember the one that hit me and the 2 that almost hit me, and thats what I see in the pic. This is california, where your lucky to have 2 car lengths in front and back of you. You leave 3 lengths someone cuts in and its 1 length now.

If you want to make the argument that going faster gets you there faster on a crowded road, I'll call your argument bullshit. If you go faster, you end up having to brake more often lest you get into a collision with somebody else, which just makes you lose time.

However, you lose fuel efficiency because you have to accelerate more. This is not to say that I advocate this kind of driving. It's reckless and promotes accidents, but that doesn't change the fact that it gets you there faster.

When you brake from a faster speed, you don't brake to the average speed of traffic. You usually go -below- the average speed of traffic, and thus slow everything down.

Think of traffic as a liquid. It has a finite average rate of flow, but individual particles in it can move at greater or slower speeds. Those that move at greater speeds will collide with those going slower, but on a road, we can't have that, because of self-preservation instincts, insurance, death, and all that. So we slow down, but it's generally not a braking to the average rate of traffic flow -- it's usually slower, and by doing so you screw up your average velocity.

This is why you get there faster by going slower. You aren't keeping such a high instantaneous velocity, but your average velocity ends up being higher, and thus you're going to cover more distance in less time.

Also, you don't lose fuel efficiency if you keep a slower but more constant rate, because you aren't accelerating/decelerating as drastically -- you're just keeping it steady.

However, I already said I was wrong on one thing, and I'm probably wrong on this, too, so you can still say you're right.

im driving along, and the guy in front of me starts to brake, so i start to brake.

i didn't SLAM on the brakes, just mearly slowed down with the flow of traffic.

then CRUNCH! [spins] BAM! i'm on teh shoulder.

it all happened so fast. and it was crazy how no one else hit me on the trip to the right.

but anywho...

it wasn't my bad, and there isn't anything i can do about some other guy's tire blowing out.

teh kid was younger than me. it was funny. he knows he's at fault. and he was cussing the whole time. then he saw my damages and cussed some more.

I was implying that you lose fuel efficiency by attempting to go faster than the speed of traffic because you slow down and then have to speed up again.

I suppose whether they gain any time depends on how determined they are. Some people weave in and out of traffic in their attempts to get there faster. This can provide substantial gains in average speed even though it requires a lot of braking. I assumed this is what you were referring to; perhaps I was mistaken.
