A small predicament...
Ok, so let's say I would like to make a TekkonKinkreet AMV. I have the original DVD sitting right here on my desk. So all I have to do is rip the footage and get to work. Right?
However, sitting nice and cozy on my hard drive is a high-definition downloaded copy of it.
I think you see where I'm getting. Should I use the DVD footage with its crappy (when compared to HD) sharpness and resolution, or should I go all the way and use the HD source (1280 x 544) ?
Technical pro's and con's? (Hard drive limitations aside)
Ethical pro's and con's? How does rule 2 go here? Yes, downloaded footage, even if I own the DVD is still downloaded footage, yet THE VIDEO QUALITY ...
What do more experienced editors do?

I'd use avisynth + vdubmod + Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides
It's not [very] hard to use avisynth to make footage sharper or bigger.
as far as working with dvd footage goes, it's not quite that simple.
Tech pros: zomg HD!!!, don't have to rip/convert/filter
Tech cons: you'll probably have to convert your HD version to an editable format (most likely huffyuv of lagarith)
Ethically...I don't think it's wrong since you bought it already, but that just may be me.

Uh - unless you download an ISO or similar disc image, you're getting something that has been recompressed for online distribution - depending on how it looks, you might as well upscale your DVD and get the same video quality.Jake Furlong wrote:Other than BIGASS hard drive requirements are there any other things I should about converting to lossless HuffYUV or simply uncompressing the footage pieces? (This monster is an x264 encoded matroska file.)

My pressumption, Bashar, is that the x264 in quesion does actually represnt an HD source. And if the encoder did his or her job and actually cared, then upscaling the DVD will not produce the same quality which is already present.BasharOfTheAges wrote: Uh - unless you download an ISO or similar disc image, you're getting something that has been recompressed for online distribution - depending on how it looks, you might as well upscale your DVD and get the same video quality.

I'm not taking it for granted, but it seems to me our OP finds the HD version to be nice and shiny. If it isn't, by all means, upscale and compare. Or just go with 848x480.BasharOfTheAges wrote:Well that's always the the thing. I never take that for granted.Kionon wrote:...if the encoder did his or her job and actually cared...
