Perhaps we could just use a computer program to randomly select winners.

You can achieve impartiality in a documented, formal way, you certainly get accountability (assuming the source code and revision history are transparent, which modern revision control systems can give you), and I don't think anyone would really notice the difference.

In all seriousness, it really has nothing to do with popularity or who has the best poster, but who people think will do a good job. Being a judge means watching each video seriously, not favoring or hating the music, anime or creator and seeing it for its good and bad aspects.

If it's a "popularity" contest to choose the judges, then it becomes no different then the VCAs...

Vlad
I took my vote seriously (I didn't vote for myself) .... as for my Posters ... well ...

I look at it this way, you can look at the list of potential judges and get a pretty good idea of who actually has a chance of being chosen and who doesn't. Of the ones that have a chance I don't think any of them shouldn't be a judge. So while the voting is a popularity contest (and AFAIK done just to prevent 'all the judges were koop's friends' type bitching) the results will probably end up with decent people.

As far as the posters, I figure there's no need to seriously try for votes. I've been around the site for years now, people already know me. They know I'm experienced in AMVs, they know I'll call a bad video a bad video regardless of who made it, they know if I feel like taking it seriously I can analyze a video fairly well, they know I'm overly harsh, and to a fair degree they probably even know what type of video I would find worth winning. If that's what they want in a judge they've already decided to vote for me before any posters went up. If they think I'm just too much of a prick they've already decided to not vote for me and no poster will change their mind. The same is true of most others, the ones who might seriously get picked are the ones well established on the org where everyone has long ago formed their opinions of them. So I figure have fun with the pimping because it doesn't really make a difference at all.

Well godix ... the name remind me something :?

Nevermind :D, i completly agree that you and Vlad said, but i hope that even if the judges are designed by a popularity vote, they will have those quality. At the end, the main point is to have good judges for the VCA. /selfpimp Of course if i am elected, i plan to seriously involve myself in looking at all the videos and judge them :).

Edit: ***Voted*** for the best judge ever (and it's not me :)).

I think people trying to use their social context rather than their experiences on this site are doing jack all to help this succeed, and if people like that are voted then this whole thing will lack one important thing - consistency (probably the biggest reason for World Idol failing so hard). While its good to have judges looking at AMVs in different angles, if one of the judges uses 'oh this is what I learnt on a technical level at such and such institution' then the panel will be just as bad as those Idol shows =| Of course this all goes back to people having different definitions of an AMV yada yada yada, whether its the art etc but yeah I hope that people don't just assume that they will make good judges just because they have some qualification or are in a digital art learning programme. Of course ignore everything I've said in this post and a-m-v.org will just turn into a poor attempt at duplicating AKROSS - a European editor there could probably see and intepret an AMV differently to someone else from say, America - once again 'context'. So I don't sound racist for some reason, here is an example - concept AMVs like Silencio and Vertigo come from Europe, MADs comes from Japan, but why? Has anyone ever really considered why two differently styled AMVs come from 2 different ends of the earth, so I don't stray from thread I'll just also add that a good judge in this should be able to break through those cultural barriers. Fortunately I know a lot of people on that list will judge an AMV as an AMV and nothing more - maybe with the exception of 'most artistic' category. So its all good.

Once again, summary: to me a person who has been around the site for longer (4-5 years) and has been exposed to a wider variety of AMVs - seeing the trends rise and fall will make a better judge than someone who has been here for 2-3 years but only uses the "I belong to a technical college so I'm obviously the better choice for a judge" excuse. No that wasn't a summary I ended up making a completely different argument =/

Hmm sorry for the rant Koop, should really have said this in that other thread, one particular advertisement in this thread triggered all of this =P

Fair point - but then some people have been around for years and still can't give feedback worth crap because they're just kind of not very literate and can't elaborate properly :P (no names!)

I guess the best advertisement I could give my judging qualifications then is that I have more posts on this forum than any other nominated candidate
