Saw my second favorite band, the Russian rockers DDT, this week - they had been slipping from my listening range, but the concert definitely reaffirmed my faith in them as a 2nd favorite.

I think my expectations were a bit low (relatively speaking) going into the concert - it was an acoustic program which I somehow thought would be slower and more subdued, I wasn't in the right mood for something so song-oriented at the time, and I also watched a lot of their performances on video which were apparently sourced from TV and, as I discovered, didn't do justice to the sound.

Despite complaints from the band leader, the unmatchable Yuri Shevchuk, about the sound quality they had to work with on this short North American tour (venues had not been very forthcoming it seems), the sound was actually really good. And once the show got going, the musicianship actually blew me away, while some of the musicians really put out a lot of energy - especially Yuri himself, whose vocals were honestly amazing. That's just something that has to be seen live to be appreciated. The brass duo, as antique as the idea might sound for a rock band, did some completely awesome, charged-up jazzy stuff, while the band broke well out of acoustic mode later on and rocked hard - especially in the encore. Shockingly enough, despite coming to what I thought would be (and was) a song-oriented show, I ended up hearing the best damn guitar solo in it that I've yet witnessed. Huge props to guitarist Alexei Fedichev, who's barely a couple of years my senior - I definitely under-appreciated him before, though he's definitely found his footing with the band now, after more than 3 years with them.

On the minus side, most of the audience was fucking boring. Unfortunately there's quite a lot of middle-aged slobs that showed up just cause DDT was a name they remembered from their better, more rebellious days, but it was obvious many of them weren't into the music - and even if they were, they had long eaten themselves past the point where they could actually rock. It was especially stupid when Yuri had to get them to re-start a sing-along part (a requisite DDT live feature) - not as a gimmick, but really because the response was dismal. I did my part, yelling my head off, but unfortunately I was part of a (younger) minority there.
DDT on the other hand proved that even with relatively old songs taking a good chunk of their program, they're not a tired old band for tired old people. They had genuine energy, which I was glad to see, and stellar musicianship which actually surprised me and totally blew my expectations.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Paganfest is coming to Atlanta on may 15th, so I'm going to that instead. I'm also going to Orlando for Prog Nation on may 31st. After that, it's up in the air.
