Uh, actually, no they didn't. If you ever read the comic, they left out a LOT, including the introduction of Akira himself. The Origonal Head Hunter wrote:and the anime people did it in one movie.

This is what is wrong with the film.
"The first live-action film is scheduled for release in the summer of 2009 and will move the story's setting to "'New Manhattan,' a city rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years ago."
Why can't they leave it where it originally was? Oh yeah right, anything made for Americans couldn't possibly acknowledge somewhere else being interesting. Just like they had to have the anorexic pregnant Americanized Godzilla trash New York.
Cloverfield was a nice film. It shows that Hollywood CAN make an original film if they want. I just wish they would want to more often.
I'm a purest, if they want to call it Akira, why not make it properly in Tokyo?

Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.

I used to be a purest... but as I grow older I find that as long as the spirit of the characters and story remains true to the original work I don't mind changes for the almighty dollar. In fact... I think more people are likely to watch the original after seeing the movie version. Books and foreign films that are remade by Hollywood always see a spike in sales. Why would this be any different? I may not have like some of the things that Peter Jackson did to LotR... but I can't argue that tons more people read the books because of the movies.
On a side note... has anybody seen any updates on James Cameron's attempt to bring Battle Angel to the screen?

I'm not rich... I just plan on dying before I retire.
