Adapting anime titles to live action would in 99% of all cases be an impressive disaster.

Why you ask? Or maybe you didn't. Whatever.

Because you can do things with animation that you simply cannot do with live action. CG does some amazing things these days but if you're going to make the vast majority of the show CG, why call it "live action" at all?

Eva, DBZ, Akira, Speedracer, Battle Angel...gag me with a spoon. Putting aside that I dislike every one of those shows, can't they just leave the genre alone? I can see it now:

Uwe Boll has announced his acquisition of the rights to Escaflowne. He is quoted as following, "We, and by we I mean I, have decided to move the setting from Japan to Chicago. Further, the main character will be renamed Katalina and instead of being pulled into a different dimension, she will instead be sucked into the coin return slot in a prominently displayed Coke machine."

While i don't really mind a Hollywood version... why "New Manhattan"? =.=
Does it really hurt sales so much if you leave it in Tokyo?

Harder to sell Japan to an American audience... and probably a lot cheaper to shoot in the US (though I'm not positive). Also... most recognized US actors are Caucasian... doesn't make a lot of sense for them to be in Tokyo. You can get away with Europe since its also heavily Caucasian (though for some reason they still decided to make Constantine an American based in LA... I hate Keanu).

Akira, Tetsuo, Kaneda... they all looked pretty Japanese. Anyway... I guess you could find a reason for Leo to be in Japan. Maybe he's a caretaker for an elderly woman that live in a haunted house... or a cop sent to escort a Yakuza boss from the US to Tokyo where his partner is decapitated by street thugs...

The vast majority of anime characters look Caucasian, so that's irrelevant. As for the movie(s) in general... i'm not sure what to think. I don't watch many movies to begin with, but i'm looking to the whole new era of Western live-action adaptations of anime in a SoaP kind of way. They'll create tons of hype because people will assume that they'll be bad.
