Well considering what we willing pay for anime on dvd you might want to check out a vhs to dvd capable machine. They can be a bit pricy, but no more expensive than some anime.
The trick is to make it known you have one, and will make dvds of vhs tapes of locals or family or friends. Do that for say 1-2 bucks a tape and in short order your purchase is paid off

Heck I sure wish I had had one when I started to feel a need to convert over to dvd.
A buddy of mine took the cretin approach though, he "rented" a machine from a Staples or some such store with a good return policy. Used it to convert a lot of tapes, then returned the machine
