Second Pass On Virtualdubmod Not Working

Post by anime_angel_ash » Mon Feb 04, 2008 1:02 am

The subject heading says it all. Though I've gotten virtualdubmod to work just fine, and the first pass turns out all right, it's still in the area of 97 MB, and stays that way after the second pass. This has happened to be before, and I've yet to figure out what I need to do to correct the problem (in case anyone is wondering, yes, I've read and followed the guides).

What do you have the bitrate or quantizer set at? That could have everything to do with it.

(Actually, making sure the bitrate is capped to a point where it would definitely output the size you want if it filled the bit cache should always work)

Also, making sure to compress your audio helps too.

I'm having trouble with this too. In one test the second pass was actually bigger

I compress my audio using LameMp3. Should I be doing something different with second pass?

what kbps are you setting your audio to?

also if you have a lot of grain/action in your video it will be a larger file size.

Oh...I didn't know action made a difference. But shouldn't I still be able to set a file size with Xvid?

The compression works by seeing how many pixels/blocks can stay the same from frame to frame. The more those pixels change (action) the more space needs to be used to hold all the values. How small are you trying to get the encode?

P.S. Try h.264 just for S&G afterwards.

66mb I think that'd be 70% of 80mb anyway.

I will when it gets more compatable. :P

Compatible? It's been around for 5 years. I don't follow.

you can set the target bitrate lower on a second pass but the quality will drop as well..
