Solving too many scripts

Post by The Wired Knight » Thu Mar 06, 2008 3:17 pm

Ok, so recently after capturing four more DVDs of episodes to work on my current project Premiere started crashing constantly again. I could barely get in one edit and I couldn't preview for more than 5-8 seconds before it shut down automatically.

This seems to be a problem due to how many scripts I've got in my project window regardless of how many I am using. I had somewhere around 52-53 scripts but only about 15 of which ended up being used in the final project. After removing all the unused ones the project ran fine with FAR less crashing. However, I am about to start a new project using the same series and I can't edit if it will crash everytime I make one change. So here's the solutions I've tried and thought of, any suggestions are appreciated.

Tried
1. Already tweaked with the virtual memory, raising nor lowering it had any effect. It's currently set to min 4k mb and 8k mb max. Free space on the hard drive is currently roughly 9 gigs.

2. It doesn't appear to involve the parameters of avsgui plugin on Premiere. Currently I've got it set to allot 18-24 mb per avisynth file and adjusting this number didn't seem to solve the problem. Though if you can think of an ideal number for this many scripts I'll gladly try it.

Possible soltions

1. Use fewer scripts; I really don't like this idea since I change my shots A LOT over the course of a project and I typically need access to that many files before I find the shot I like best.

2. Rewatch the entire series to plan out the entire video shot for shot in some sort of permenance before editing so I only use the scripts I need from the get go and skim the others in virtualdub. While this will work I think you can see how time consuming this could possibly be.

3. Combine scripts; currently it's 53 scripts because there are 52 episodes each half an hour and one script of all the clean openings and endings. I thought it might solve the problem if I were to combine say four episodes into each script. Hence creating really large scripts roughly an hour in length but then there would be only 13 scripts instead of 52. Though Im not sure if Premiere would crash while scanning an hour long script since it will be a lot tougher to locate what I need.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I'd go with combining.

Also, I would wonder, does simply importing all of the scripts cause problems, or is it only when you drag them out onto the timeline?

Perhaps you can import a few scripts at a time to scan them for clips you might want, then remove them from the project if they dont contain anything good.

The last time I tried combining (a few years ago, so it was on a crappier system), I was able to make/load the project fine, but had endless problems exporting, even small segments. I redid the thing from scratch.

After that, if I had a problem with too many scripts, I'd make a duplicate of the project and designate one as first half and the other as last half. Delete the appropriate scripts from the appropriate project.

(yay multi-source videos)

Problems seem abound with the scripts. What happened is the editing was working fine UNTIL I imported an additional 12 episodes into the project. the files imported fine but after that premiere would crash at the slightest provocation. Importing the clips wasn't a problem at all. Operating premiere after that was done was the problem.

Things it crashed on

1. Scanning too long in a clip
2. Dragging a clip onto the timeline
3. Previewing for more than five seconds

These are the exact things it was doing about a month ago till I tweaked with the avsgui plugin to cut the amount of memory aloted to each script. However that didn't solve the problem this time.

I'd prefer combining but I am concerned with eventual exporting problems. If I can export in at least 1 min segments then i can solve the problem by just combinign the segments in a script and vdub. I don't think I can designate two files with half of the song each because since it's a single-source AMV I'd still probably need most to all of the scripts to even work with half the song and I don't see that alleviating the problem.

Although; this may seem roundabout and time consuming; if Tim's problem occurs to me then I could combine them to edit. Once I know what scenes go where and have settled on it, if it has trouble exporting I could then quickly remake the video using only the scripts for the episodes I need (i.e. keeping two sets of scripts, a combined set and a divided set) and seeking out hte exact spots. Wouldn't be the first time I had to remake a video with seperate scripts (file corruption was the reason I had to do it once before).

Perhaps keep using avs files for the episodes you plan to use in almost their entirety and for the episodes from which you just need a little part make an huffyuv/lagarith of that part and import that file instead of the avs of the episode. This might help a bit. Obviously, if you can afford to convert everything you need in huffyuv/lagarith, it would be better, but if you have little HD space, just do it for episodes where there are a few scenes you need. It should cut down a bit the amount of avs files you use without having to combine.
Not sure if this can help, though. :?

Have separate project files where you just load in the scripts and scan for clips. If you find some you need, then import just that script into your main video project.

Yeah that's kind of what I was thinking if worse comes to worse and teh combined scripts can't export. Maybe I'll just make some half-assed 3 min video of random clips using the combined scripts to see if I can export before I commit a whole project to it.

Other than taht I'll probably take the above method using vdub to scan the scripts for clips I need.
