the timeline you see at the bottom of all those is so you can change the effect inside the length of the event/clip...

if you are only wanting a single solid color you don't need to bother with it much.

the pen tool is right below "the normal edit tool"

Ah but I've tried using that tool before but I don't know how to draw with it. Everytime I draw something similar to a rectangle it goes crazy and turns it into curly circly shapes :S

Don't draw out the shape by dragging your mouse around, you set anchors and connect them. So like click in one spot, then click in another, then click above your second anchor then click above your first anchor then click on your first anchor again and you'll have a rectangle.
