erm I know this might sound a little daft but what is a plug-in?

it's like an extra little program you can install that will add extra features into Vegas

(kinda like adding extra fonts to your computer and they will show up in mspaint or photoshop)

just mask the character and then add the effect to the masked layer

I don't want to mask the person

I want this circle in the middle empty and the borders with this effect. I think you can somehow do it with the Color Gradient "Elliptical transparent to Black" effect in the Media Generator Bar, but I have no clue how.

Help appreciated

well you can either use a cookie cutter of it has the shape you want (like I did) and feather the edges way up,

or mask out the shape you want (if cookie cutter doesn't have it) and feather the edges way up(I'd probably set the feathering to both: feather in and out)
