flicker flicker flashy flashy

Post by JaceCam » Thu Mar 27, 2008 11:45 pm

okay I'm starting to see a.. painful thread in alot of amv's specifically the ones in the VCA. alot of them are really flickery and flashy.. which apparently makes them awesome *shrugs* now I know it takes alot of effort to do something like that. and I applaud the creators for taking all that time to make really good amv's. Tho there is a point where all that effort becomes a bad thing. and its a fine line to walk but some people do it well. others are so far from the line they can't even see it.

that being said I have to ask. Am I the ONLY person here thinking that we need to tone down on the flickery flashy twitchy over special effected AMVs before someone has a seizure or goes cross eyed? or am I just a black sheep?

It's something of an ongoing debate. Sometimes an acrimonious one.

Also, thread relocated to more appropriate quarters. May flames be kept at bay.

I'd have to say that I don't like all the flash-gasm noise either...

guess that makes two...

I usually tend towards the seizurific ones, but I don't feel that super seizurific strobetastic automatically equals win. It has to fit the music and/or add to the vid in some way. But either way, there has to be a decent concept and vid there aside from all of the flashy pretty. (Though I'll let concept/story slide a bit if it's an instrumental/dance vid and VERY pretty. (And here, pretty doesn't necessarily= seizure factor. :?)) But yeah, a badly done seizurific vid, imo, is a worse trainwreck than a regular bad vid, and I can definately see how people can not be into the flashy vids (well done or not.) I guess its a matter of taste. . .and probably also partially attention sp

I stopped watching videos almost entirely because the ones with effort put into them were so flashy. And because I was kind of out of the anime loop.

I think you´re right.

All the over flashed stuff is more a kind of evolution. You want your editing to get tighter and you get impressed of tighter editing and this ends in "I sync every bullshit".
A nice parody in my eyes has made one of my best friends:

It gets into a very perfedic way of a vid. How a parody should be ;P

So yeah some people loose the line. Look at professional vids at MTV! There are not often flashy amvs and they still work great. Example:
Foo Fighters - The Pretender
I´m really impressed of the simplicity in the editing and the energy that´s comeing out of it.
I saw a flashy vid as add for a new show and it really felt at the wrong place there.

It´s nice to see great vids without flashy inferno in these days:

For me: I tend to get away from overdone syncing and get back more into mood and atmosphere and I like it.

People who want to do flashy stuff: Do so, but don´t expect that the real world (a lot of user/viewer groups of real life) out there will dig it. It´s seams that the vids are more from editors for editors.

As with everything, clever does not automatically equal art.

Being a wiz with all the special effects won't ensure the amv you create will simply haaaave to be better than one without them.

If they are over done, it kills the video just a surely as using crummy grainy vhs source material.
Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.

You needed to clairify your question better - though you've hit the point where it doesn't matter and the question is suffeciantly vague enough to have about 5 different discussions hapening here at once.

Flashy seizure videos = bad videos.
Good effects videos != flashy seizure videos.

They're different, but these topics always end up with some people talking about the former while some talk about the latter. And they do it at the same time without distinction. That's why these topics go nowhere.
