What's with the hardon everyone seems to be getting over this res lately?

Well I don't think it's anything new... people have been using it for as long as dvds have been around.
Maybe it's just more common now that more anime are widescreen.
If you are using mp4 container though, it's pretty dumb to do 848x480, since you can just keep it 720x480 like the dvd and then set the PAR flags to resize it.

Just did a test with one of my AMVs using xvid at constant quantizer.
848x480: 321MB
854x480: Not possible to encode, must at least be mod4.
856x480: 324MB
864x480: 324MB
But its not just efficiency, some poorly designed decoders have been known to have playback problems with material that is not mod16.
