Fanart in AMV's?
Is using fanart in AMV's (not including the opening/closing credits) generally a good thing or bad thing?

It's not a "whether or not" or "where" question.
It's what the fanart is and how you use it. And for what.
I.e. noone doesn't like well-done fanart filling up as much of the video in a way that makes sense. A doodle that looks more like a WWII-era naval mine with legs than a Supersaiyan to introduce a romance video may not work so well though.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I think the OP means using somebody else's art, or getting permission for it maybe? If you are unable to draw your own, then using somebody else's may be the way to go, but that's kindof a gray area.
Generally it would be a very good idea to get a person's permission to use their original artwork or fan art. I would try to do this if at all possible. The other side of this argument is that if it is available, and is popping up on image boards or just random places, go ahead and use it? I mean, we don't ask for permission to use anime or music usually, and this is the remix culture. I just wouldn't be suprised if you got somebody complaining that you used their artwork without permission if you go that route.
In terms of style, personally I love seeing original work or fan created things in AMVs.
