To HD or not to HD?

I definitely wouldn't suggest working in 1080p if you're looking to use an entire series and you need to convert to a lossless format. If you can manage to get it editable using the original source (ie; processing it through AVIsynth and editing in a program that allows you to edit straight from the AVS or can do bait-and-switch), then I say go for it.
However, in this case, it does indeed look like an upscale, so I'd say downscale it to 720p and work from there.

The screenshot you posted almost definitely is also upscaled. The lines are just way too unsharp.JediNight wrote:but it's definitely at least 720p.
In case of anime, only very few shows are true 720p, and next to none actually benefit from the resolution (example of benefit: Ergo Proxy opening).
Keep in mind though that most upscaled raws still look much better than the 704x396 versions, because of much higher bitrate.

True Tears is broadcast in 720p, so yeah, I'd second going for that instead of using the 1080s, unless you decide to do some killer cleaning to compensate for the upscale. The problem with going HD, is that depending on how you encode it for release, it's going to be significantly larger than your typical AMV, and it might not playback in real time for some people. I was working on a TT vid myself a while back (it died, of course) and I planned to release two versions, one in 720p (well, 720-30p, since it was 29.97 fps) and one at a lower resolution, such as 480p.
Good luck working with it though

.. working in HD or SD actually has no limitation -- if your computer is New Enough T_T
. mine is an AMD 9600 ( launched my Gateway GT-5432 into the River -- too slow )
and editing is not the problem; I'm guessing that its the CODEC that makes playing it back
impossible on my 2.4gig computer!
. for some reason, everyone keeps forgetting one flaw that can make or break
even a poorly made AMV ... "can it be played-back on LapTop Computers"?
.. think about it .. 94% of those who watch AMV's are still using 2gig Processors
to play these things ( the other 4% are using Vista with 9gig Processors ) which
makes Making AMV's a "true test" to the creators.
. Anyone can Play to an audiance, so can your audiance Play Your AMV being Presented?
-- just a thought

You just described me perfectly. My computer still chokes on 720p playback. ;_;post-it wrote:.. working in HD or SD actually has no limitation -- if your computer is New Enough T_T

You'd have to have a system that was 5+ years old to start falling into the realm of playback issues. I have a 3 year old PC and 1920x1080 H264 video files play back with ~40% CPU load, sometimes spiking to around 60-70% in really really high action scenes.
Use CoreAVC for H264 playback, and if you still have issues on only 720p, then I guess those are the breaks for having really out-dated computer parts >.> Or re-encode it to 480p for yourself
