Audience
So...
I've had a conversation about this with a few people already, so I think I'll ask the same to everyone else.
I'm constantly surprised when people say they "followed the story" or "got" whatever I make in my video. Truth is, I hardly ever think about how people are going to interpret whatever I make or at least think very little of it. Of course to me, this just means that people are interpreting my videos in such a way that it'll make sense to them, but I don't necessarily believe they actually fully understand why certain things were done the way they were.
But anyways, that just leads me to this... what goes through your mind when editing something, as in, who is the 'audience' that you're actually aiming for? Do you aim to please only yourself and if other people like it, then its cool? Or, do you constantly think about how other people will see your video? And, which people? Those that have no idea what the sources are about? Or the ones that are familiar with one or the other, maybe both?
We could go further for this. Is having an easy understanding of the video a mark of something good? What about those videos, which aren't easy to understand, yet are still widely accepted?

I'd like to be all nonchalant and say that I edit videos for personal pleasure and that I don't care what others think, but nah. I'm vain enough to want others to enjoy my videos as much as I can help it.
Obviously I can't control others think, but I guess I always keep the potential audience reaction in the back of my head. They don't have to think that my videos are the bestest things evar; as long as they can get some level of enjoyment out of my videos, then I'm satisfied.
Usually there are two "levels" of audiences that I try to keep in mind:
1. the ones who are familiar with the relationship/character/song that I'm trying to explore
2. everybody else
I might be a little more interested in the reactions from group 1, but it's always nice when people from group 2 say that they "got" something (doesn't have to exactly be what I had in mind) out of the video.

(Disclaimer: I'll probably sound retarded for answering this since I don't have any videos uploaded on the .org, but I assure you, just because I don't have any videos on here doesn't mean I've never edited a video before. I've just never made an AMV.)
With that said, I can say that when I do finally make an AMV (this summer?), I will be the first person I try to please. If I don't like the video I'm making, then something's wrong.
That said, in the end I would also want said AMV to be able to entertain others as well. I don't want to make a video solely for myself; I want to be able to provide some level of entertainment to others as well, because that would bring me even more pleasure out of my AMV. I've worked in video production for about 5 years now, so I guess wanting to have a finished product that others will like is just part of how I think now. (When someone is paying you for video work, you have to make something they will like, so I suppose it just becomes habit to want to please others. >_>)
As for as concept, it's always a plus when anyone can watch the video and understand the concept behind it. So I'll be trying to make the concept easy to grasp without completely watering it down. I suppose it's a bit of a balancing act. (Videos with 0 concept bug me. I'll even accept "fun video to make you want to dance" as a concept, but when people throw random fight scenes on the timeline and synch to every few measures or so...that does not a concept make...)
I think it's entirely possible to have a concept in a video that anyone could understand, but that would also have a larger meaning to the people who know the source material. That would probably be a decent goal for concept (for me).

When I make an AMV the only thing I think about is, "what will KING PWOLF think?"
