I edit for myself to an extent.
I'll use what anime and music I want, despite what others say about it.
But when it comes to the editing itself, I always have that "I'm gonna get bitched out or nagged at for doing this" floating around inside my head.
But really, it depends on what that specific something is, if I personally like it, others can fuck off, but if it's iffy to me, I'll go with what I think the viewers would like.
But in the end, I can never really explain anything correctly or interpret what the audience will think, because dammit, as those close to me know, my train of thought is wilder than a fuckin roller coaster designed by a 6 year old with ADD.
So yay for winging it, having fun and hoping that no one steals my plushies and lights them on fire after raping my ipod with a a hammer because I used cookie cutters?

It's NOT FUN to be inside my head

It's a form of self-expression of sorts for me
I'm just trying to edit a good video, which is always to made according to my own liking (except for a couple of birthday vids and stuff) That's the inner value I have when editing. Nicely motivating. I may sound selfish but I don't really take the audience in consideration.... However, it's just the editing process. I do not consider the videos I've edited mine. Once I've released a video, then it's just "out there", a neutral thing for anyone to like, hate, interpret, use, reflect or whatever. It's not anyone's possession, nor does it have any value on its own.. This is propably the reason I don't really give a damn if I'm not given credit or if someone claims my videos as his own

Looking at my videos, for the most part, I edit for myself. I'm glad that people liked my AMVs and got some enjoyment out of them.
This is probably why I've been at zero output for over a year and a half. The last few projects I've started have yet to fully satisfy my own desires. The concepts that are really close to my heart, at the moment I don't have most or all of the source materials necessary to produce a video to my satisfaction.

First I make videos for myself, but I do consider changes for other audiences. Well on the other hand, my vid "Deus Machina" showed that my kind of taste isn´t that bad at all
I better speak about my current project, because one of the cores lies on a differend editing for a different audience:
The main concept is just for myself as well as the effects. Beta testers help me to improv the effects for a better feeling and I consider changes in the timeline that more audiences understand the main theme behind the vid.
The editing itself is very different if I have to compare it with my last full video that I released around half a year ago. It´s not about the "I sync tons of stuff, but don´t drift to much into the perfedic kind of syncing"... this time it´s more about feeling and atmosphere again. That brings me to the point very I place some kind of chaos sync into it in form of distortion and same kind of disturbing/creepy scenes. If I look at some vids on MTV, I can see that they don´t pay that much attention on sync itself. Scenes, mood and atmosphere play a much bigger role and well they work too and often look awesome. So why shouldn´t it work here?
I can´t completly drop sync. That´s my amv editor nature I guess, but I set it on different places like scene changes and inner sync.
Let´s see how it will turn out! I´m sure that I´ll be pleased of it. My main goal is to make it my best work ever and I´m sure that I can do it. Anyway I know that some audiences won´t like it. It might be the music or the vid itself, but overall I have to say that I don´t care because it will be more for every day people and not editors in my eyes.
Some kind of summary of the crap above:
Yeah people on the org often tend to make vids for editors and I try to reach different audiences this time. That´s about it

I do it for me. I get a lot of "I don't understand, but that was cool", which is fine by me. I'm usually pleasantly suprised by the responses I get, so I can't lie and say that it's not fun to get praise for the things I do, but it's a secondary thrill. Ever make something and you're so happy with it that you just sit there and watch it over and over? Yeah, good times :3

I really don't know what the audience wants ... all I know is that when I'm editing 70-90 percent of the masses won't like it much, but I do it anyway ... meaning I edit what I want to see and to torment the poor fools who download said video.
However, this is not to say I that there are days I wish I was one of those editors who could crap on toast and the masses would come rushing to it like it was the greatest grilled cheese sandwich ever made. Of course I'm not holding my breath, because of the reasons above.

My audience is and will always be the anime fans - the people who are still into the fandom and are actually still watching stuff, so in terms of this site, probably leaning towards the common lurkers in 'Anime Series Discussion' =) I primarily make AMVs for conventions around Australia because people go to a convention to celebrate anime and its culture, I just want to be apart of that by offering something for the fans. a-m-v.org and the way AMVs are realistically perceived comes after and is addressed separately to my wanting to entertain an audience of fans =P
