woooooooooosh!!! my first op exchange (with catch)

Post by lady_ho » Thu Apr 17, 2008 6:21 pm

hi... i've watched a few amvs here and there on youtube. just got myself a decent laptop, adobe premier and got some final fantasy fmvs (cause animes = too many eps for starters).

so, here i am. completely newb to the whole amv making scene and just realised how difficult it is after familiarising myself around it.

for starters, i didn't realise how difficult it was to get an opinion!!! :shock:
my vids are completely amateurish but i would love some feedback. i can't seem to find a decent guide out there that tells me the elements of what makes a good amv so it's really a self discovery path i've found. i know there are guides on this site but it's like jargon to a total newb. what i need is a proper dummies guide to it. lol so i would greatly appreciate some opinions (or rather a complete lecture on what im doing wrong) so i can improve.

in exchange, i'm sure my opinion counts for something right? so i'm willing to exchange opinions for ROMANTIC and ACTION amvs only. cheers :D

link i need opinion on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvaeWIVphMQ

Well what it is, is that most of the people on the forms don't like you tube due to the poor quality of it. Most won't give an opinion unless they're able to get it from the ORG itself.
Somedays you just sit back and wonder... why me?

did you upload that video here? since it's a youtube link i cant really op it unless it's on this site. or is it you want comments on the tube? (i'm confused)

as for an idiots guide, i Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides 5 times before really getting it all and did most of that while editing and trying things out along the way, if there are particular points you are stuck on there are a number of help forum or you could ask some one for help *shrugs* most people here will help people when they ask (hint: stalk the ones you see replying to threads in a helpful manner)

I'm willing to do an op exchange with you everything in my sig is an actionXromance video. so uhh yeah let me know what it is you're after
new banzors in the making :p

hehe... not looking for a technical guide just yet. actually, i was thinking more of a content structure guide. like what makes a good amv. the only article that gave me an idea of amv styles was this one article. here: http://www.movietome.com/users/fantasyf ... 0-25340228 so i don't really entirely what the guy is saying... is there more than one style of making amv's (i'm not talking technical here... more like, individual artistic style is what i'm getting at).

hmmm... i tried to upload the video but it just freezes my computer. i'm using vista so i dunno why it's doing that. should i use ftp instead? sorry, have to make do with my crappy you-tube version. it's not totally bad quality though. i'm just looking for some harsh criticism so i know what to improve on content wise. can you overlook that i didn't upload it on here? :D

I can't tell you how to improve quality if it's been compressed to a low quality flv file... so yea, I'm sorry if this sounds mean or harsh but no, I won't make due with a youtube version. To me the technical aspects are just as important as the very subjective "artistic" aspects.. try an ftp program if IE is failing you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and as for your "guide" I don't believe there is as such thing as a guide to making a good amv. Good is such a subjective term, what is one man's trash another will find it gold. What you should do is go out and watch a ton of videos, and find out what makes them good for yourself, and try to follow those models...
there are many different ways to edit, and many different styles, no one style is better than the others, unless you feel that style is better. What you should do is find out your own taste, and edit to your own taste.
the first thing that article mentions is a "story"... personally I don't believe that an amv needs a story... however a good concept to me is essential. See how subjective this all becomes?
ok fair does.
hmmm, i see what you mean on the subjectivity of it all... i guess i should do some more research... i thought it was funny that it was hard to find guides on structure. thanks for clarifying :)
the basics are fairly simple:
Sync the video to the music... there are a few ways to do that:
1. Internal Sync - where the movement of the clip matches to the movement of the song.
2. Cut Sync - where you make a cut on the beats or movement of the music
3. Lyrical Sync - where you match the words of the song.
4. Mood Sync - where the mood matches the feeling of the music
What you have to do is decide when to use what kind of sync, you have do decide what is good for your video, and don't let others push you around, and remember that there are many people involved in this hobby and all have different taste. you will never please everyone all the time, so first work on pleasing yourself.
However that doesn't mean that you shouldn't listen to the ideas of others... sometimes a second pair of eyes can be beneficial. Sometimes others have ideas you might not have thought of or they can make you see your work in a different light.
Also don't get into amving cause you think it's a way to make you popular on the interwebs, because thats a bad idea, you should be making amvs because its a fun hobby, you enjoy it, and your a crazy enough fangirl/boy that you wanna do it.
