lossless files (uncompressed, Huffyuv, Lagarith) are going to be large, which is why you would want to save file space by disabling the audio.

Uncompressed will be the largest, then Huffyuv next, then Lagarith.

Ways to disable the audio:

In virtualdub mod:
Streams -> Streams List -> Disable Stream

In Avisynth:
killaudio()

you might want to plan your video out more, and take clips instead of trying to rip the whole thing, unless you have a sizable hd or your computer can handle source files on an external (like mine)

I did it for years. Takes a lot of prep-work, but it's the best non-AVS way to do it.

From my experiece, lagarith is about 2/5 the size of uncompressed, and about 1/2 the size of huffy. So... around 6 gigs per episode? However you should cut clips as people say. That'll save alot of space either way, no sense in searching through your entire episodes while in the editor. |:

Just checked, just under 3 megs per second for lagarith. (slightly higher than I estimated)
However, it was briefly mentioned, but you can import you avs files directly into your editor in order to save space. But this will slow things down quite a bit (especially if you have a slow computer, expect alot of pre-renderings  ), so make sure you've commented out all your filters before you attempt this.

Yay, many replies that cleared many things up. So this is what I got so far:

1) If you're planning on using lossless codecs, then you're going to need way too much hard disk space, period.

2) Plan first and convert a little bit at a time.

So that's pretty much all I needed to know. I am planning right now, kinda, but since I'm editing something that requires 70 episodes, this is going to be tough. My final question is:

You guys are talking about "avs scripts" and putting it directly into your editor? What's the avs-way to do it? Can you create an Avisynth file then import that into Premiere? How would it work, assuming that you wouldn't have to convert everything into lagarith? This is a long shot, but you probably can't use avs scripts in WMM, right? :D

I believe the AMVapp has a plugin for Premiere in it that allows for the importing of .avs files.

If it's not in there, then perhaps someone else can link you to it. My copy of Premiere is on my Mac, so I can't use AviSynth in it, period. :\

I usually make huffy clips from episodes, but I found that this process takes me about 4-6 hours per series and is really demotivating. So now if I have the dvds I just bait and switch the vobs using MJPEG <- preferred method of editting although you really can't rotoscope or mask until you've done the switch, or if im using raws I chuck the entire series into huffy and buy an editting specific 500gb external hdd. Basically encoding the entire ef a tale of memories series on 704 x 400 resolution on huffy = 120gigs of space used up :P

I make clips with DGIndex + avisynth + Virtualdub Mod and a way to "cut back on time" is to save the clips in the "job control" in VDM and then run them all later like when you are sleeping or something... however a dedicated external is pretty sweet :3

Doesn't editing with .avs's require a relatively strong computer?
I usually go with lagarith. Which is all pretty much why I usually edit with movies/ovas/small series. :p

..I forgot to mention, exporting clips from Vdub TOTALLY demotivates me. After I attempt to do this, the project is officially dead.
