I'm not talking about people on the forum. I'm talking about my friends in real life. I stick out like a sore thumb since I'm the biggest Otaku in school. And most members of the anime club are pathetic, their knowledge of anime is limited to YTV, the library's selection of manga and dubbed anime. None of them even know about Haruhi, Lucky Star, Clannad, Kanon, Air, Gurren Lagann, Zero no Tsukaima etc. etc.mal shuir wrote:I'm not your friend .. just so you know.hasteroth wrote:My friends hate Lucky Star. Well some of them know OF a few of those. Most of em are girls who like yaoi and yuri and really bad K drama-ish shoujo anime. I watch at least twice the amount of anime that all of them (individually, not combined) watch.

Sounds like my experience too.hasteroth wrote:I'm not talking about people on the forum. I'm talking about my friends in real life. I have 2 friends that REALLY like anime, and usually can handle themselves in an anime trivia contest, and I know of a few friends that claim they like anime because they've watches a few random shows.
To like something enough you won't turn it off if it is playing, doesn't make you a fan. I hate SouthPark and will NOT watch it at all. But while I like the Simpsons as much, I won't immediately turn it off if there's nothing else to watch.
A fan will likely try ANY anime, but will not necessarily like it all.
An otaku likely likes what they like to amounts they will look a bit peculiar
Do you have anime posters? anime miniatures?, anime writing materials? anime playing cards? anime games? anime music? anime clothing? anime food stuffs?
If you managed to say yes to all, you are for one an otaku, and two likely looked at as weird, and maybe even more odd than Konata Especially if the above can be applied to just one series of anime (I don't have any anime clothing).
Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.

I gots a couple a figures, mostly old DBZ ones. An oversized collection of manga (watch out when I start rereading my manga cause my room gets really messy, I think "Where'd the floor go?" about sums it up), 4 posters, Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards (yeah I know), loads of downloaded music, plenty of games, a few shirts, no ANIME food stuffs (I have Pocky!), and the majority of my school supplies are anime or japan related (even my geometry set). I can say I am truely an Otaku.

I try to focus my stuff around Clamp manga/anime by the way.hasteroth wrote:I gots a couple a figures, mostly old DBZ ones. Nobody asked you. Besides, have you even seen my room? The scattered manga acts as a makeshift security system since the door only opens a few inches as a result of the blockage, it's easier to open from the inside of course (it opens into my room).Pas1990 wrote:no.hasteroth wrote:I can say I am truely an Otaku.

From a social health standpoint i'd agree. It has nothing to do with how much you like anime - it's about how much you obsess over a given hobby. On the other hand, "taking work and play with equal amounts of intensity and respect" (one of the defining characteristics of being an otaku) is so ill-defined that it could both be a good thing and a bad thing at the same time.mal shuir wrote:PS: I wouldn't be proud to be an otaku.... rl is more important.

Of all the things I do too much, being an anime nut is so far down on the list it isn't even in the top 10
Lets see, the thing I do too much that might be #1 might be posting on damn forums But I've been getting that under control (should have seen me a few years back).
#2 swearing. I sure wish I didn't, it bothers me, nasty habit to have.
Certainly not a workaholic mentality though. Being too caught up in RL can be as destructive as being too much the escapist.
