Are digital/video effects really necessary for a good AMV?

Post by Iced Earth Fan » Tue May 27, 2008 6:34 pm

I'll be honest with you, I'm really horrible with special effects in AMV's. But where I tend to excell at is musical timing with the video footage. I think its cool when someone goes out of their way to use special effects in his/her AMV, but I've also seen plenty of good vids that use little to no effects at all. So I'm curious to know what fellow AMV creators think about using special effects in the creation of anime music videos.

No.

Seriously, why is this even a question?

"Good" is extremely subjective outside certain common-sense norms. For some (groups of) people, it is in fact neccesary to have no effects at all in a video for it to be even good.

Fine if you want to use them; fine if you don't.

Just a matter of taste really; you do what you want and are comforatble with. I don't like making effects heavy videos nor do I think they are necessary to do well; I've seen plenty of no effects videos go through and win cons or be just as popular with fans as some effect heavy ones. Though with a general audience, flashy videos are more likely to get noticed, this is just simply what is eye catching.

In either case this has been discussed tons of times and you'll find this is pretty much the majority opinion.

It depends on the good AMV. If the good AMV requires effects, then yes. If not, then no.

This is a subject that has been brought up and hashed out more times than I can remember. What is all comes down to is what Otohiko said. It's all subjective. There's no axiom for what defines "good" or "bad" in an AMV. It's entirely up to the opinion of the viewer.

Personally I think it's a case by case basis. Sometimes effects can be used to enhance the story/mood/intensity/whatever of a video and sometimes they're simply unnecessary. Simple as that.

Illeia is walking proof that the answer is "no".

It depends on what you define as digital effects... Effects can be invisible (don't even notice them) or very visible... It all depends on what the video is trying to achieve

I use effects to tell the story I want in the way I want (i.e. for the concepts I have, I use digital effects to make the scenes that are impossible to find in an anime)....

Depends on who you ask.

I'd like to think 'no', but the endless hordes of viewers suggests that they hold a different opinion.

Depends on the situation, sometimes the effects make the video much better, other times it can ruin a perfectly good concept.
