Otakon 2008 AMV Contest Rules: THEY'RE HERE

I actually guessed something like 98 last year in an actual contest run by the AMV DH. I won but never received my prize.

Anyway, those numbers vary pretty wildly. I'll venture a guess that more came in this year and go with...120.

Hopefully, my 45-second bundle of joy will be among the finalists...

Yes 2003 in my opinion was one of the best ones since it had some of the videos which I still consider top of the line quality. (ie. like the Metropolis one with the "Here I am" song , Trigun with the "Superman" song, Noir with "Die Another Day", and your "Glory of Love" one with Escaflowne, just to name a few) ... And of course, who can forget Doki Doki's Card Captor Sakura vid.

Although 2006 didn't have as many entries, I think the ones that were in the contest were all around very good.

Anyhow, if I were to guess, I would say 167 videos this year. Seeing that it's been on the lower end since 2003, I think it's about time for the numbers to start climbing again.

2005 was my first Otakon and the first time I saw the amv competition. I thought that was a pretty good year.

That actually has been my fave year so far in terms of how amvs go. Decoy Ops was amazing (though I actually think I voted for Open Your Soul since I knew the other one would win). And of course there were other excellent ones.

Yes, that was the year I made my first video. I used the "P" word and got stuck watching it after a seven minute Linkin Park/Max Payne video late at night with only one showing. That plus the sound was too low. Still, for the small room that stayed to see it, it was an enjoyable experience.

I couldn't believe Vic didn't win for that Die Another Day video. That was great. Guess everyone wanted that Top Gun thing instead. Eh.

2000 was my very first Otakon, though. And Doki Doki won that year as well. I guess I'd been inspired by his vids ever since.

This will be my fourth Otakon - I've been attending since 2005 and I simply cannot NOT go. Despite a 13 hour road trip being the requirement (since my friends and I are broke otaku for whom air fare looks a lot like Dealer Room money to...) it's always the highlight of my year. Rock on.

This will be the first time I attend the AMV screenings, though. Hopefully, my vid is entered into the contest, but I'll check it out either way. I usually watch the fan parodies but this year I'm going to watch the AMVs as well, since I seem to be "back into it" (only made three so far this year, but since I haven't made any since... what, 2002? I guess that's progress, heh) and I'd like to see what I'm up against. I don't expect to win anything, but it would be awesome to see my vid on the big screen. =)

I dunno, with gas prices today, flying may not be too much more expensive and I'm sure in some people's cases, cheaper.

Airfare between most major airports in the US is up about 340% over last year, and they'd charge you an extra fee for wearing both shoes on the airplane if they could.

That being said, if you take a puddle jumper to BWI, the price is still about the same for whatever rediculous reason.

If it were just me, that may well be true. But since it's me and three friends, it's much cheaper to carpool down in my car and have them split the gas money with me. A little tiring and probably more dangerous than flying, but much more affordable, even with the ridiculous gas prices.

Oh yeah, back in February I bought tickets from Los Angeles to Atlanta for Dragoncon in August, the price for the same flight is more than double now.
