Subs do it in for me.
After that, poor quality, but I can stand a little poor quality if it's otherwise a good amv.
Too much lip flap. I still can't get past too much lip flap.
Too long. Most AMVs, I say again, most, not all, are much better at 3 minutes than at 5 or longer. If you don't at least consider editing the music then your only doing half the job.

Pray 4 peace! Not an AMV, something you can do to help!

Kind of a weird answer...
What kills an AMV for me (aside from subtitles, which is an auto-fail) is lack of communication, by which I mean an AMV that has nothing new or unique to tell me. Why should I watch something that inspires a "been there, done that" feeling? What can I get out of your video that I can't get out of someone else's? I hesitate to call this lack of communication a lack of storyline, because there are many videos which have no real storyline, but certainly share certain concepts or emotions. An AMV could have good effects and synch...but there are lots of videos which do that and more. It's the "more" I'm looking for, and if an AMV doesn't have it then I'm turning it off. Usually I give things about 60 seconds to sort themselves out...

Subtitles are ok with me, especially whith someone just starting editing. the biggest turn off of subtittles vids is the contant looping of the same footage. I can think of many that way. I know I still fight with transferring DvD's to workable format and getting a clean clip to use. but as I work at it I will actually get it.
Effects can be good, effects can be bad, it's a hard call. it's pretty much case dependant
Slow songs really put me to sleep.
Depressing songs = insta delete.
Really drawn out footage that nothing happens.
and there has to be some kind of synch to the video.
Poor video quality can turn me off also, unless something else catches my attention.
All said and done it pretty much depends on the video, creator.
Like one recent video most people were raving over how good it was and to me it sucked worse than a twenty year old hoover. So it really depends on the video. some the same people hated and I loved.
