Who knows a lot about ffdshow?

Post by ultimateX021 » Thu Jul 10, 2008 11:50 pm

Hello. I just joined this site and would like to know any important information about ffdshow. My relatives downloaded it onto our computer. I experienced with it for a bit, but I'm a bit confused about its controls. I heard it is good for audio and video compression, so if someone knows anything else about it, let me know okay.

It's not just a decoder. It also includes tons of filters that may or may not be useful for improving quality during playback. For encoding purposes though, you're probably better off leaving them alone and using AviSynth instead. In most cases FFDShow can function as a VFW encoder too, which is extremely useful because its HuffYUV encoder compresses better than the 'official' version and supports YV12. I don't even have Lagarith or standalone HuffYUV installed these days.

Interesting. So it sounds like FFDShow is good for decoding, but may have some features that allows it to improve quality. Not that much though. Well, since you mentioned VFW encoder, What is VFW encoding and if AviSynth sounds like a good recommendation, how does that function better than ffdshow? :?:

VFW = Video For Windows. It's a framwork.

AVIsynth is a scripting language that we like a lot. It does video processing, and is quite good at it.

Awesome! This AVIsynth sounds like one heck of a doozy. I just checked sourceforge.net and some resources and saw different versions of this software. Which one is highly recommended?

Either the latest stable, v2.5.7, or the latest RC, v2.5.8 RC2. We haven't noticed any major problems with the latter so it should be pretty safe to use. In fact, unless something big happens (like a new release) it will be used in the next AMVapp.

Well. I'll check this program out when I can. Once my summer semester at college is over I'll download it. I also checked out the AMVapp feature and it showed three or four programs in the technical guide by Ermac. I wonder if that allows me to choose which programs to use. How many does it have?
