Are digital/video effects really necessary for a good AMV?

Depends on the video itself actually.
As I think that you only start editing a video when you have an idea, then it depends on what that idea is. Some ideas are pulled out better without effects, other ideas need effects to have a meaning. Perhaps using effects in a video that doesn't require them would detract, or perhaps some videos would be good with a proper use of effects, cause the idea actually needs effects.
At this point I think that it's clear that editing without an idea won't actually bring a good amv at all... I don't think that forced editing, or editing just to, will bring something worth watching... or at least, it's rare...
...
But then again, if you don't have an idea and you want to make a good amv anyway, you could go with the trick "tits+particles+glow make people happy therefor amv is good!!1!one!1!!". Or the other trick would be "Upbeat song+shitload of anime openings"... people tend to like these things in most cases. Not that the amv will be good or bad... just that most people will probably like it.

I agree to a certain degree. There is a certain feel that "plain" AMVs have that is lost when you start adding lens flares and whatnot. However, you can have a careful manipulation of effects and still have a "plain" feel.mirkosp wrote:Depends on the video itself actually.

There are common effects that you can use if you are careful and still look like an amv without any effects: reverse video, and freeze frames (if you are really careful of course). Masks even can be used effectively even if you are trying for the "effect-less" feel. I use masks to edit out a characters that aren't in the rest of the AMV. (even if they are a major character... sometimes it is just more appropriate for them to be gone) In these cases, your job is to use effects to change the meaning of scenes and look like you didn't edit the scene at all.
On the other hand: I'm pretty sure by effects people think about Euphoria / Skittles / other stuff and not about the simple stuff like dissolves and fade ins.

Ohhh you're just saying what the org wants to hear. You know the rule is effects or gtfo.mirkosp wrote:Depends on the video itself actually.
