Okay, I got a question: how long has Otakon not been doing AMV contest screenings in the Main Events room anymore? And I'd always been under the impression that Video Room 1, assuming it's still the big hangar, could fit a lot more than 2200 people...

Also, do you know <s>gods of death love apples</s> where and when the winners of the contest will be announced? Is it still Masquerade intermission?

Congrats everyone! I'm sure it will be a great contest!
Actually, there was only one flashy video.. and that didn't make it in due to a DQ. |:
Was it mine? D:
I think he was referring to Castor Troy's video. That or going the complete opposite direction and referring to rehdogg.com...
I kind of assumed he'd meant the Fate/stay night video (which had a ton of stills and effects), which was DQed due to winning beforehand.

Whoooo-hoo! We did it! And we're actually going to see it this time.

I've been waiting since 2004 for this. :)
And we're actually not competing against each other this time. ^_^

Congratulations to all the finalists, and I'll see you at the con!

We got a butt-ton of complaints last year that nobody could hear the contest at all because the downside of being in a 61,000 square foot hangar is that is sounds like you're in an 61,000 square foot hangar. However the same sources who attended the Eminence concert last year say that the audio was perfectly fine. The only difference between the two was that for the concert, the room was cut in half. In an effort to satisfy the attending audience and present every video in the best possible way, I have ensured that the room stay divided the entire time. As it stands, the room will seat 2,814 people, and the screen is 450" diagonal. I would rather turn people away if push came to shove than degrade the quality of the presentation. You all worked extremely hard to give Otakon an incredible contest and the creators deserve nothing but the best.

Otakon hasn't announced the AMV awards during cosplay since...I want to say 2005. I believe this is the same year that Otakon starting renting the $100,000+ arena that cosplay pretty much dominates for an entire day. God forbid we make use of their downtime. I don't know the specifics, but my understanding through the grapevine is that we're not welcome there. Instead, we have been announcing the AMV Contest winners near the end of Iron Editor, when the judges disappear to <strike>sober up</strike> vote for the winner.

I'd kind of hoped, but knew I wouldn't make it in. And only six comedy vids?

I know it was probably the hiccup with the feathered cookie cutter effect about halfway through as well as likely video quality issues for a couple of scenes. Couldn't have been avoided, but whatever.

NekoCon is coming up and my entry here was already "runner-up" in its maiden run at AMA. I have time to fix things. As for next year,...I started making these things about 3 1/2 years ago and didn't make ANY ballots until TekkoshoCon this April (drama and trailer) and AMA in June (drama and comedy, both of which "runner-up"). I'm SO close now and experience has taught me much, but I'm still learning.

Yes...next year, it's on, baby!

I'm actually glad to hear this. I went last year and having the 'double-sized' room KILLED the audio. It had to travel such a far distance for folks in the back and then it'd bounce off the shitty walls and echo.

At the same time, I am in total agreement that at the Eminence concert, the divided room (i.e. only half) sounded perfectly fine. It was night and day and the only thing different was a divider between the rooms.

I do however wish they'd screen back in the 'old main events' again since that was my favorite venue and I have fond memories of it. However, like you said (and I guess Peter hasn't been in awhile)...they haven't done that in at least two or three years.

...the concert conflicting will definitely lower the attendance on Friday too so...

Nah I'm fairly sure it was 2003. 2004 and 2005 were at either the AMV Panel or the Iron Editor event and every year after was definitely at Iron Editor. I wonder if that's due to the cosplay folks or the AMV folks just going 'screw it' since it's too much trouble.

Ugh well curses I knew I wouldn't have made it in with those kinks in my AMV.
Vic you mind shedding some light on my AMV? It was the Esca one, or at least I hope its the only one.

Edit: I'm already sending a e-mail.

I know a lot of people leave Masquerade as soon as the "halftime" stuff begins anyway because there really isn't much to keep them entertained. I had a thought before of making a special AMV reel with the winning videos and showing them until the Masquerade judges are done with their stuff. Then again, they have been fairly quick recently about adding up scores and such so perhaps there wouldn't be enough time?

There were at least two that I remember in the pre-screening.

That is exactly what happened back in 2003, not to mention the way it's always been done at (for example) AnimeNEXT.

My last time going to Otakon was 2004, so I guess I'm a little out of the loop. What do they use the old Main Events room (4th floor ballroom) for nowadays? That was an awesome room for a contest screening.

I think you're right about 2003. I vaguely remember we got kicked out of cosplay after Master Matt Pyson stepped down, probably because cosplay wanted to take advantage of a new guy who wouldn't want to ruffle any feathers. Either way, despite it being a much smaller presentation, I kinda like it being during Iron Editor. It's more "our crowd".

It's better then I remember it back in 2002 when I was just handed the trophy in Video ops (actually, that was the first they they actually did the trophies...)
