LOL, Meri how could you not get in? You're practically AMV royalty! XD

Seriously, I can't wait to see your vid. I'm not going to watch any of the other finalists' submissions so I can see them for the first time in all their glory. =0

It took me two years to get into the Otakon AMV contest until I finally made it in 2003. That said, I try to treat every year as if it were my first time submitting, and I usually worry about the final outcome; never assume anything, I always say!

I'm not putting my entry online until after the con, so it'll definitely be a surprise! The reason I don't go to pre-screenings is because I want to be surprised by all of the videos, so I'm really looking forward to seeing the lineup at the con!

Pardon my ignorance, but as this will be my first AMV contest (PortConMaine's was cancelled this year) I have a question regarding the schedule:

I noticed there are two time slots for the contest. Does this mean half the videos will be shown in each, or that only the Saturday showing will have judges in attendance, or what?

I'd be happy to attend both, but if one is somehow more significant, it would be nice to know, so I can plan my con accordingly.

Vic can answer this a bit more authoritatively, but in general if a slot is marked for the contest, the whole contest will be shown. There are usually multiple showings as the AMV contest is one of the most popular events and there's no way for everyone that wants to see it to be able to with just one showing. Most of us (at least among my friends) regard the Friday night showing as the 'main' showing, though this year a number of people will likely not make that one because of the overlap in times with the major concert Friday night.

Otakon is an audience-judged contest, so the convention attendees at both showings have the opportunity to submit ballots to vote for the videos. The ballots are typically included in the reg packets with replacement ballots available at the showings. You usually have until a few hours after the last showing to put your ballot into the voting box so the staff has enough time to count the ballots and determine the winners before they're announced (at the end of the Iron Editor event Saturday night).

Thanks for the clarification, Ash!

The contest is 2 hours (and 2 minutes ^^) long, so each time it is screened, it is screened in its entirety. It is shown multiple times to give everyone who wants to see it, a chance to do so.

Tradition has been to put a ballot in every con-bag, however that leads to us printing 15,000 ballots that we don't have to, and a whole bunch of people forgetting to bring them to the screening. This year, ballots will be handed out at the entrance to the event to hopefully maximize our returns and minimize the cost. Because of the tight scheduling, the deadline to turn them in will be RIGHT after the screening on Saturday. We're going to have a load of ballots to count, and most of the AMV staff will be tied up with doing panels and loading equipment. As with previous years, the ballots will be perforated so that you can tear off your vote and still keep the list of videos.

As long as I get my Souvenir ballot, I'll be happy :-)

Were there a lot of spare ballots last year? I know that after I voted, I just took one of my friend's ballots who didn't see the contest. Still got that ballot for the first Otakon AMV Contest that I went to (2007)... Then again, maybe I'm in the minority here...

No, I agree, it would be cool to keep the ballot. This is my first AMV contest (and it's at Otakon! whoo!) so I'm kind of freaking out (in a good way) right now. ^_^

I would imagine (though of course Vic would have to be the one to make the true call on this) that extra ballots could be made available after the voting is closed- like at the Iron Editor, or perhaps the 'encore' showing of the contest on Sunday, since doubtless they'll print out more than they need.
