R1 vs R2 DVDs
Do R2 DVDs tend to be a little higher quality?

The quality differences depend on the title, really. Here's one of the worst I've seen. (and this is the original R1 release, not the R1 rerelease)

(Of course, the R2 image looks stretched because it's anamorphic)

Most likely, yea - the filtering scripts are what make the video quality what it is. There are a lot of older releases (and the handful of random ones from year to year where encoders fuck up royally) that are far better in one encoding over another, but most of them time the two releases are almost identical in terms of video quality.AaronAMV wrote:I know R2 refers to the region that it can be played, I just see this awesome quality in AMVs with DVDs that I have, but don't have as nice quality. Is that because the person has a good script or something?

I agree mostly with what BasharOfTheAges said, that most of the problematic titles were released years ago, and today things are pretty much the same.
However, on R1 discs they usually cram a lot more episodes on there than the R2 discs (R2s are ridiculously expensive and usually only have about 2 episodes) so the R2s might be encoded at a higher bitrate, and have slightly better quality.
Keep in mind that there are two different kinds of "R2s". Region 2 refers to Japan AND much of Europe. The ones from Japan are the good ones, anything from Europe is in PAL format and will be much lower quality.
