Vegas is a lot more intuitive to use imo. I used to avoid it because my main workhorse app is After Effects, and Adobe products do have pretty good integration with one another, but after trying out Vegas I'm hooked. For editing short-format stuff with lots of video and audio clips, Vegas just feels faster and more intuitive to work with. Premiere is powerful, but it feels sluggish and clunky for dense, hectic projects like modern music videos.

For someone just starting out, I'd strongly recommend Vegas instead of Premiere, and I'm still an Adobe fangirl.
Well, I was really just talking about the capabilities of the two when I said that. I actually have to agree that Vegas feels much less clunky than Premiere. But as far as capabilities are concerned, both programs are pretty tight with each other, save for that masking thing. Oh, and Premiere's titler is better than Vegas' titler, imo. There's a few other subtle differences between capabilities, but whatever. I don't really want to get into that mess right now.

Vegas does typically run smoother in my experience, though.
... yea ...

Vegas 8 Pro has a new plugin, Protype Titler, that is a lot more advanced than its native text capabilities...but honestly, all NLEs are kind of primitive when it comes to text when compared to After Effects and the like.

I'd personally say make one video with WMM to get the basics of synch down, and to learn the struggle of earlier generations, then move on to Vegas or premiere. I've used both programs and both are easy, although I like how vegas is laid out much more.
