The Dub Track English Dubs, not Inferior

If I wanted to read a story, I'd go pick up a book. But I don't want to read, I wish to watch, and I don't speak Japanese, so it only makes sense to listen to the dubs. And with the stuff that gets butchered beyond repair in the dubs, as in the case of stuff like Naruto or One Piece, I stick to the manga.

The way I see it, this is a case by case scenario.
A show that takes place in Japan just feels odd for me to watch in English...but if it's a show like, say, Hellsing or Big O that clearly takes place in Britain or New York (respectively) then the dub just feels a LOT better.

Also, fact is, just as Japanese VAs have a handful of greats and a grab bag of 'ehs' so is the case in the US. Dubs have gotten better, but there are definitely still weak ones being made even now.

I do have to admit though, it's been years since the last 'unwatchable' dub I can recall (I can't get through an episode or two of ADV's Aura Battler Dunbine dub without wanting to chase down Carl Macek and beat him with rebar for all those horrible accents he had the cast use.)

To this end, personally glad at hearing the announcement of Funimation licensing Baccano! that's one of those series that, all things considered, needs an English language track to get the full effect, and I'm confident Funi will do well with it (come oooon Sonny Strait for Isaac.)

Im for both, and wont get into big detail since all the reasons have already been said, as for choice, and there are some that sound good in both languages, DBZ shockingly(to those that think im looney) being one.

well that's the difference between the dub and the japanese. in the japanese his voice is supposed to be the prideful, arogant prince, in the dub he's a sadistic, evil psychopath, the perception of his character changes from one to the other.

Most of the time I watch dubs, depending. Recently, I just finished watching Witch Hunter Robin dubbed and i quite enjoyed it but for anime like Genshiken, I switch it to subbed because it seems to fit better due to the context of otaku and the japanese voices are more what I imagined from reading the manga.

true, but most dbz characters go nuts in one way or another when something really dramatic happens to them, goku's transformation into a super saiyen was when he was super pissed at the world since almost all of his friends had just been killed.

I pretty much agree with everything the OP said.

Perhaps we're all hardwired from birth to watch Anime a certain way, in which case I'm eternally grateful I had the luck to be flexible to both extremes.

I'm only posting here because someone bumped the thread in-time to be caught under the boredom that I'm currently suffering from.



I will have to honestly agree with your points. Though I am not so hot on dubs anymore due to one major screw-up: Naruto.

If Toonami hadn't already fucked up my perspective of the show, "loopy-fist" did.

I can understand replacing most of the 'Dammits!' and 'shit..' with 'believe it!' and 'oh man!' (and even sake with 'elixirs') but when you take drunkenfist and replace it with 'loopy-fist' turning one of the only acceptably awesome characters into a retarded moron using a technique so queer that simply saying it outloud makes the fab-five subsequently itch in their rotten little crotches, you have quite clearly stepped over, and pissed on my line in the sand.


I may be over-reacting to this. I may be splitting hairs and leaving out NUMEROUS of important details that would help to better explain my newly found dislike of dubs, but this is simply the one, pure and clean-cut moment that stands out among all-else.
