Favourite Artists/Bands?
Well, I haven't found a Thread like this, so I just went ahead and made one
I have 3 favourite bands. They're all Progressive Bands, however they all stuck out in that Genre:
1. Tool
Genre: Progressive Metal/Alternative Metal
Years active: 1990–present

Tool is a very alternative Band and their Music is just not comparable to anything else. They impress to an unreachable maximum, both lyrically and musical. Their Album "10,000 Days" is for me the most amazing piece of art that ever existed.
- Do I massively exaggerate?
- No, I'm not.

"People see rock and roll as, as youth culture, and when youth culture becomes monopolised by big business, what are the youth to do? Do you, do you have any idea? I think we should destroy the bogus capitalist process that is destroying youth culture."

Volta is indeed the pwnage.
Here's mine:
1. Streetlight Manifesto
Genre: Ska punk (Third wave ska)
This is hands down my favorite band, they are the band that REALLY got me into music and they just kick major ass. I love all of their music. Their singer/guitarist is a very talented singer and can play the guitar very well, they have probably the best horn section i've ever heard and their drummer is phenominal.
Albums:
Keasby Nights
Everything Goes Numb
Somewhere in the Between
2. Against Me!
Genre: Punk, Anarcho Punk, Folk punk.
This is Hands down my second favorite band, I have gotten into them only recently, but they are amazing. Their older stuff (like first album and before) is just simply amazing punk / Anarcho punk, recently they have kinda sold out and strayed from their roots, and their lyrics talk about how mad they are that they've strayed away, but some of the recent songs are still good. The singer has a GREAT voice and the music is just great.
3.
There are far to many bands after those two that I like. There are about 15-30 bands that I like about the same that would be in 3rd place.

1. Meshuggah
Genre: The level of experimentation, stylistic variations, and progress during Meshuggah's career have caused music journalists to categorize Meshuggah under several musical genres. In general, Meshuggah have been labeled as (often a combination of) thrash metal, death metal, avant-garde metal, experimental metal, extreme metal, math metal, progressive metal, post-thrash metal, alternative metal, grindcore, or even terms like tech-thrash or hi-tech metal.)
Years Active: 1987-present
Origin: Umeå, Sweden
Current Members:
Jens Kidman (Vocals)
Fredrik Thordendal (Lead Guitar)
Mårten Hagström (Rhythm Guitar)
Tomas Haake (Drums)
Dick Lövgren (Bass)
Discography:
1989: Psykik Testbild (EP)
1991: Contradictions Collapse (LP)
1994: None (EP)
1995: Selfcaged (EP)
1995: Destroy, Erase, Improve (LP)
1997: The True Human Design (EP)
1998: Chaosphere (LP)
2001: Rare Trax (Compilation)
2002: Nothing (LP)
2004: I (EP) FAVORITE
2005: Catch 33 (LP)
2008: ObZen (LP)
Trademarks and characteristics that define Meshuggah's sound include complex, extraordinary technical metal with mathematical songwriting, odd riff cycles, neo-jazz chromatics, usage of polyrhythmic structure, rapid key and tempo changes complex "rotating" time signatures and rhythmic syncopation. The music's complexity combined with aggression makes some critics call the music cacophonous; the polyrhythms can make the music sound like band members are playing different songs simultaneously. Hagström notes that "it doesn’t really matter if something is hard to play or not. The thing is, what does it do to your mind when you listen to it? Where does it take you?"
2. Isis
Genre: Post-Metal/Atmospheric Sludge
Years Active: 1997-present
Origin: Boston, Massachusetts
Current Members:
Aaron Turner (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar)
Jeff Caxide (Bass)
Michael Gallagher (Lead Guitar)
Aaron Harris (Drums)
Bryant Clifford Meyer (Electronics/Guitar/Vocals)
Discography:
1998: Mosquito Control (EP)
1999: The Red Sea (EP)
1999: Sawblade (EP)
2000: Celestial (LP)
2001: SGNL>05 (EP)
2002: Oceanic (LP)
2004: Panopticon (LP) FAVORITE
2004: Oceanic: Remixes & Reinterpretations (Collaboration)
2006: In The Absence Of Truth (LP)
There is an overt intention of progressing heavy music present in Isis' output; a desire to further the intellectual cause that pushes them forward. This is evident within the clear progression of their sound from release to release, their influence on heavy music, and their acceptance in art circles where other metal bands are not so readily embraced. Their stated goal is "not to break away from the scene that [they] came from, but to expand upon it". Turner has complained that "metal in general has long been unjustly maligned as solely the province of knuckle-dragging meatheads [...] That said, there's never been a group of musicians like there is now, who are helping to advance the form."
3. Mastodon
Genre: Progressive Metal/Sludge
Years Active: 1999-present
Origin: Atlanta, Georgia
Current Members:
Troy Sanders (Vocals/Bass)
Brann Dailor (Drums)
Brent Hinds (Vocals/Lead Guitar)
Bill Kelliher (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar)
Discography:
2001: Lifesblood (EP)
2002: Remission (LP)
2004: Leviathan (LP)
2006: Call Of The Mastodon (Compilation) FAVORITE
2006: Blood Mountain (LP)
Mastodon are working with Brendan O'Brien on their next album. While the lyrics have been reported to explore topics relating to Czarist Russia, the band has denied that the album will be about Grigori Rasputin. These rumors started after a drawing by Munk One of Rasputin was featured in merchandise. Besides dismissing the rumors the band has also stated not to expect a new release until next January at the earliest. The band debuted three new tracks at the Bonnaroo Music Festival. The track names are said to be called: Divinations, Ghost of Karillah and Oblivion.
Thankfully, I have seen all of three of these bands live...

King Crimson is huge, as far as musical influences go. The band singlehandedly started the entire progressive/symphonic rock movement in 1969, and with the same album also laid important groundwork for metal. Shockingly, instead of becoming a big tribute band to their first revolutionary album, they've kept pushing - helped by the frequent breakups of the band, in which only Robert Fripp remains an original member. Going into very dark heavy territory in the 72-74 territory, then lighter but extremely intricate sound in the 80s, and then increasing experimentation toward the late 90s which resulted in a number of "ProjeKcts" and then new material for the new millenium, their sound consistently changed and frustrated those who wanted to hear them play old hits.
In my estimate, this band has been a constant 20 years ahead of their time, throughout their 40-year career - it's the audiences that ought to be catching up to them. They are a primary and direct influence to virtually any progressive rock/metal band around today.
I saw KC live in 2003.

DDT is to Russian rock what Rolling Stones are to Western rock music - not because of similarity in style, but in terms of how much the movement is identified with them.
Many bands like to talk or sing about rebellion, oppression, going up against authority - DDT have had to do this. As puruers of a forbidden style in the Soviet era, they were threatened, searched, arrested, and banned by the KGB. Their songs were always full of wry social humour but at the same time compassion.
They were one of the few bands to survive the euphoria of drugs, alcohol and commercialization which ravaged the Russian rock movement in the early 90s when they were finally let out of the underground.
The band's hallmark and sole constant member, Yuri Shevchuk, is known for his harsh, intense, rasping voice - he sings with the full volume of his lungs; and the no less intense, honest, but humane lyrics about life in Russia, corruption, war, soldiers and workers - a true voice of the people.
Major changes in the band's sound started taking place in 1997 when they were invited by Aerosmith to record at their studio in Massachussetts, where they carefully studied every detail of American sound engineering, eventually building their own studio in Russia; and in 1998 when Yuri Shevchuk brought in experimental keyboardist Konstantin "Cat" Shumailov. With the release of 1999's "World Number Zero", the band took on a very industrial-influenced sound, which alienated some of the older fans but brought in many younger fans. They do come back to a simpler sound, too - including 2003's re-recording of many favorite DDT songs and 2007's project where Yuri finally went to studio with many of his "kitchen songs".
I saw DDT earlier this year in Toronto.

If DDT is Russia's Rolling Stones, then Akvarium is the Beatles - again, not to say anything about their sound, rather about their iconic status in the movement. Under the leadership of sole constant member B.G., a prolific, truly lyrical and intellectual songwriter (and former engineer), they are a darling of Russia's intelligentsia and widely appreciated for their softer, quirkier sound (compared to, say, the heavy driving DDT).
It's hard to sum up the scope of their music. Much of B.G.'s lyrical work is influenced by Buddhist philosophy.

Arising on the ashes of the old Russian rock scene came a new one in the early 1990s. Originally named Military Jane and singing exclusively in Engrish, Pilot were an underground grunge band who had fun and didn't give a damn, until the late 1990s when Yuri Shevchuk (of DDT) invited them to play at a major rock festival, but on one condition: they had to perform two songs in English.
Thus began their journey, under a new name (which according to them was picked as the stupidest, blandest option so that they'd never get popular) - which eventually took them to become one of Russia's premiere rock bands.
Thanks to Ilya Chort's quirks, the band retains an intellectual edge. Heavily influenced by Buddhist philosophy and other complicated (pretentious?) ideas, he keeps pushing Pilot's otherwise very straightforward, song-oriented format into concept albums and other such projects. Some can't stand that, I personally enjoy the philosophical elements.

Ridiculously hard to pick faves... and put the in a certain order! >_>
Well, my faves include Tool, who have been introduced before. But I'll throw something new to the mix:
Blonde Redhead
Genre: indie, experimental, post-rock, noise-rock, dream pop, no wave etc. Pretty much depending on their albums. The earliest work is very no wave and noise-rock influenced but the newer work leans more on strange and dramatic post-rock and on their latest album they're experimenting with electronic textures and dream pop / shoegaze.
Years active: 1993-present
Biography:
Blonde Redhead's noisy, dissonant guitars, alternate tunings, and quiet, stilted lyrics have often been compared to early Sonic Youth. After randomly meeting at an Italian restaurant in New York, Japanese art students Kazu Makino and Maki Takahashi and Italian twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace formed the band in 1993. The name was taken from a song by the '80s no wave band DNA. With Makino and Amedeo on guitars and vocals, Simone on drums, and Takahashi on bass, the band's chaotic, artistic rock caught the attention of Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, who produced and released the band's debut album, Blonde Redhead, on his Smells Like Records label. Shortly after the album's release, Takahashi left the band. The remaining members continued as a trio, releasing a second album in 1995 on Shelley's label, titled La Mia Vita Violenta. For their 1997 release Fake Can Be Just as Good, recorded on Touch and Go, the trio was joined by guest bass player Vern Rumsey from Unwound. By 1998, the band eliminated bass and scaled back to guitars, drums, and vocals for In an Expression of the Inexpressible. Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons and the Melodie Citronique EP followed two years later. The band's first for 4AD, Misery Is a Butterfly, was released in spring 2004. For 2007's 23, the group opted for a mix of dream-pop and delicate electronic textures.
(yeah, I stole that from allmusic.com)
Discography:
1995: Blonde Redhead

1998: In an Expression of the Inexpressible

This is propably one of the most unique bands you can find. Not necessarily "underground" or "indie" anymore, but they're certainly doing their own thing.. Personally, I fell in love with the dreaminess and Kazu's sweet and melancholic vocals on "23" and quickly exposed my ears to their other albums. Their noise-rock and intriguingly experimental guitar work on "In an Expression of the Inexpressible" is quite hard no to love and get drowned in :3 The songs are often melacholic and dramatic, centering on themes or having one's feelings unrequited or dysfunctional relationships etc. There's something really romantic about Blonde Redhead and their misery has propably as much to do with it as their whirly and delicate soundscapes.

oh yeah and it's interesting how the poses the bands have in their photos match up within genres. like you could teach a class on statistical correlation with this thread.
