One of the reasons I think it's harder for people to sit back and make a casual amv is because comparitivly, amvs are a huge investment of time, and if you like the combination of song+anime, well, it's your only chance. People don't want to waste their one shot at a combination on a crappy video. For me, I have to many awesome idea floating around in my head for me to do an Idea I don't actually love, but I also feel it'd be a travisty to take one of these ideas and do a mediocre job editing it.

My old stuff sucked horribly - and I knew that within, say, several months of making it. I still believe effort is the key factor. I put more time in, got something better out. I don't think I had more fun making the complete crap I started with and aI certainly don't think my motives have changed.
Like most threads that focus on this kind of thing, the concepts fall apart and don't work any more if you're someone that enjoys pouring time and energy into making something. I may not have hit the point where i'm as good as the big names of the hobby, but striving to entertain and impress is fun in it's own right, and all the bawwing of different (less obsessive) personality types isn't going to change that for me.

I think I know how you feel about your old videos, Castor Troy... cept that whole embarrassment thing O.o I was proud of my accomplishments at the time, and even though my first few videos were just to prove I could do it, I did accomplish my goal... but I knew from the beginning that my videos were crap and that all I wanted to do was to improve. Somehow I still enjoy most of my videos anyways.
However, I've also had the drive to clean up a lot of my old videos (and have done so in some cases), and re-upload them... and in some cases even so far as to want to re-make them. *ahem*
My last video, I had that same issue you were talking about where the technical editing was overshadowing what I was trying to actually do, and I knew something was off, I just needed someone else to tell me wtf I was doing wrong...
I think getting caught up in beat sync becomes more of a habit than it does show how you improved.
I think for me recognizing what is going to get complaints from the forums/other editors, comes into play as to how I make my choices today, if I like it but I know people will complain, do I change it to make the people not complain? or will I still do what I'm going to do?

x2. they remind me why i was into editing at first - looking for favorite scenes and arranging them to the lyrics. and they remind me how little i've improved.Unlimited Rice wrote:I enjoy watching my old stuff [more] than my new stuff.
the amv aesthetic castor troy was talking about - the same style of beat sync to 90% of amvs in the past 4-5 years - is what got me tired of amvs. it's not that beat sync is bad, it's that when you edit based on rules rather than you think instinctually looks good, the video is boring.
