You're making it too easy. Of course directshowsource can be used, but I was HOPINg he'd find that out for himself by researching. And nothing wrong with the tools I mentioned, they're good ones to have.Vivaldi wrote:No need to get a bunch of extra tools, Just use AVIsynth and V-dub.Kionon wrote: Third, look up MKVtools and MKVtoAVI.

Wait, you're making things needlessly difficult for him simply out of spite? Not everyone knows what AVIsynth is. And the guide doesn't even mention how to use it for anything other than DVD sources, as far as I know, directshowsource isn't even mentioned. (even if I'm wrong about that, my point still stands.)

You've misunderstood me. I legitimately ran for Most Helpful this year, and I intend to do so again. However, I do believe in personal responsibility, and I don't feel that it would be that difficult to obtain the knowledge you mentioned. If you do a search for the tools I mentioned it will lead you to doom9 threads, which will lead you to a discussion of MKV through avs, and the points and counterpoints regarding it. Meanwhile those tools are pretty clear about how to remove a stream from inside the MKV container and place it in another container, such as AVI. Since AVIsynth is indeed not known by everyone, I figured mentioning directshowsource would simply lead to extra explanations that could be found elsewhere by searching for the tools I already mentioned.Vivaldi wrote:Wait, you're making things needlessly difficult for him simply out of spite? My philosophy is to help, but I won't hold hands. No one held my hand, but people certainly pointed me in the right direction. With personal research and investment, comes personal pride.

Actually, it seems I haven't misunderstood you in the slightest.
Here's what a "point in the right direction" is:
-You give a short tip to put the problem in perspective.
-You give a link to resources where the person can do the proper research.
Here's you method:
Hand out red herring>Hopes OP searchs for it in the exact same way you do>Hopes OP choose the right link> Hopes the OP reads through a whole thread of technical jargon rather then just hitting the first "MKVtoAVI" download link he sees> Hopes that doom9 topic makes notable reference to AVIsynth>Hopes the OP even cares and decides to completely ignore specific advice given to him by an amv veteren.>Hopes OP can find sutible documentation for wtf AVIsynth even is and how to use it>Hopes this all happens before OP decides to give a crap about amvs and takes up sports. |
That's alot of "Hopes".
I'm afraid "Hope" isn't a stratagy. Hope is an ideal, it's how you want something to be. But it'll never happen if you don't f***ng do something.
Can you tell me how saying "Most people here use AVIsynth, and it's probably the easiest way. But there are a few issues with it. Read up on it and some alternatives here -insertlink-"
Gives less pride then "you should use -suchandsuch- Dewit."

Yes, you have.Vivaldi wrote:Actually, it seems I haven't misunderstood you in the slightest.
1) I was originally kidding when I said you were making it too easy. In fact, by bringing up directshowsource, I felt you were making it too hard. Overcomplicating it. You accused me of the very thing I felt you were doing. How's that for ironic (in a popular, but not literary way)?
2) You are reading malicious intent into my unwillingness to hand hold.
I'm a junior high school teacher, and I care a lot about being able to teach others. I don't hand hold my 12 year olds, why would I hand hold someone here? I note that the OP has not complained at all. I bet he's doing exactly as I expected he was capable of doing: he's reading up on the programs I mentioned and how they work. To suggest my information was not enough suggests he isn't smart enough to do it himself.
Quite possibly; if the person in question hadn't spammed half the forums. Here's what a "point in the right direction" is:
-You give a short tip to put the problem in perspective.

However, first and foremost, we actively try to discourage MKV use. I personally discourage raw use as well. Not out yet in your home country? Get the R2. I will not advocate a method which this website considers beyond its purview.
There is absolutely nothing about those two programs that are red herrings. They work. I've used them. They have GUIs that are clear and easy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using them as opposed to directshowsource. Both are outside of the ethical bounds of this website, as far as I am concerned. Here's you method:

When I said I was hoping, that was very generic. What I meant is that I hope that he will take the information I have given him to start the journey. The guides are just that, guides. They are not to be used independently from a lot of hard work of your own. I didn't want to give him a strategy. I did not want him to think there was only one way of doing something. I also did not want him to think that we are some kind of living wikipedia, when actual wikis on these topics already exist.
Woah, buddy. I don't think this is about our original poster at all, you appear to be upset for some other reason entirely. Taking it out on me is not necessary.I'm afraid "Hope" isn't a stratagy. Not my pride, his pride. Research he has done himself, scripts he as written himself, programs he has learned to use himself, will garner a much bigger sense of accomplishment than being told what commands to copy or what buttons to press. Can you tell me how saying "Most people here use AVIsynth, and it's probably the easiest way.
