My first actual anime AMV - Ashton of Star Ocean EX

Post by SarahtheBoring » Tue Nov 19, 2002 1:50 am

Fiiiinnnnaaaalllyyyy I get past gaming MVs and finish off an actual real-live anime AMV. It's a simple little thing, but I had fun with it, and hopefully I can learn from people's feedback for next time (*hint*). ;)

It's called "Fate and Frustration", and is a character profile of Ashton Anchors. Music is "Disappointed" by Morrissey, the first citation for that artist on the org (mwaha). It is wry and mildly fun in a "And our hero fails AGAIN" sort of way and is guaranteed not to drink milk right out of the carton.

If there are any problems with the downloads, please let me know. And comment if you like. Enjoy! :)

I liked it! :) I've been searching out things on this series being curious about it, and your video was a nice glimpse of the characters (Ashton in particular, of course) and the world.

More specifics are in the opinion, but a few things that stood out were:
- I was impressed with the stability of the video. You set yourself a hard task with a piece of music without much beat and range variation, and somehow you managed to keep all the clips timed pretty well to it.
- In the music, I couldn't hear a lot of the lyrics... o.O You might want to post them somewhere as the ones I could make out were very well matched with the clip sequence, and I imagine the rest were also chosen carefully.
- You did an excellent job with removing the subtitles -- I didn't even notice until I read your intro, and even when I rewatched it I couldn't pick up anything obvious. :)
- Very nice character study. I enjoyed getting to know the character through the use of a variety of clips, and there was enough to know that I liked him. As you said, the epitome of the bad-luck character, but with the sweetness underneath and potential. Dealt with in a nice mix of seriousness and humor with an obvious liking for the character. Has a feel of sortof 'gently teasing' him without being mean about it.

Thanks for making the vid!

Smiles,
-- Larissa =^..^=

Thank you, and thanks for the opinion. :)

Added the lyrics. Thanks for the tip - you don't always notice those things when something's familiar to you, y'know? And it is a pretty restrained song, though not as laid-back as some of the others I've worked with. :P But it had a sort of overdramatic lyric ("I have spent my whole life in ruins..." struck me as Ashtonlike) and an underlying affection that I liked.

I've heard from others too that the progression I wanted to draw through the whole thing didn't turn out very clear, if at all. ^_^; Well, even so, I hope it works as a profile.

Stability - Hmm. I did plan the heck out of this for such a short and simple video, and tried to keep things consistent in many parts just to make things smoother (like after the fall down the stairs, there's the goofy fear take when he's also on the floor, although that happened several episodes earlier - etc.) If that's what worked then erm, that's a good thing. ^_^;;

As for the subtitles, well, I don't want to draw all that much attention to it, but I did notice a couple of spots where the "camera" jerks sideways because I'd cropped things strangely. (basically a shot overlaps 2 clips in the timeline by one frame, and they are cropped in two different ways.) It bothers me, but maybe only because I'm looking for things like that. :P

Anyway, enough rambling from me. Thanks for the feedback, and I'm glad you liked it. It's not the most complex or groundbreaking thing in the world, just a little warm'n'fuzzy sort of piece. :)
