Note to VLC users: After a considerable amount of development, a new version is out. (0.9.2)
And on another note, AviSynth 2.5.8 is now at its fourth Release Candidate, and should be done soon.

Its softsub support is significantly improved thanks to the addition of libass, previously only used in MPlayer. They did switch to an inferior Matroska parser "for security reasons" so that has its own share of problems, but overall it's an improvement over the 0.8.x branch. CCCP on Windows and MPlayer on other systems are still superior playback solutions, but upgrading VLC is a good idea for anyone who doesn't want to leave VLC just yet.
