My notes from viewing the Pro discs, edited for readability.
Most of these are "first impressions" (quick comments) without a lot of thought put into them.
64 - Earth's Last Hope - Dragonball Z / Hoobastank
Action. Dragonball (-_-). Competently edited; not well enough to stand out in this crowd. Wrong lip sync. Motion work not dramatic enough.
And my replies (considering that I made the video for Otakon's AMV contest and sent it in for Pro):

"Action - Dragonball (Z). (-_-)." So what if you have that face on you? Considering that I used to HATE DBZ with a passion, I figured I'd be the last person to make a DBZ action video.

"Competently edited; not well enough to stand out in this crowd." On the one hand, at least you don't say "It SUCKED!"; on the other hand, considering that hardly anybody uses "old school" anime series in AMVs anymore, I think I did good standing out from the other videos. I likened this comment to Kellogg's Corn Flakes ("Taste them again for the first time") -- it's good, but not outright awesome, but still, good.

Also, I get that AWA Pro is a peer-judged contest; and yet, so was Otakon's pre-screenings, and I made finals by some miracle. Go fig.

"Wrong lip sync." I assume you mean That Moment (when Vegeta crushes the scouter). Then you didn't get the joke. That, or at least you just don't pay attention to Internet memes at all.)

"Motion work not dramatic enough." Well, I wasn't going for a drama video, was I.

Again, not everybody is going to like my video, but dammit, I think I did well with it, and I'm not ashamed of its performance at other conventions (or here, for that matter).

I still think comedy, dance, parody, and basically every other category but drama should have been killed. Or at least rename them to 'closest to being funny while not actually managing to be funny at all' and the like.

I think it was more than three or four and that really isn't so bad for a contest of this size. On the other hand I didn't see anything that really stood out from the crowd. This may be a sign that the "art form" has matured and the Pro contest entrants would be representative of that. Or it may be the contest format itself: peer selection of a "winner" leads to pressure to conform to community standards and expectations.

I felt bad giving one-word comments, but it's inevitable when you're plowing through this many vids - most of which orbit the middle of the bell curve anyway - with only a limited amount of time.

I'd side with the latter part of your statement.

But yes, having done AWA Pro before, the videos seem to mash themselves together if watched all at once, but I dunno...in years past, I recall a number of videos standing out immediately. Studio Gaijin's Anger Management and Ian's Do it Right (Shake it) immediately come to mind.

If you haven't figured it out yet, every con is different. A video that makes one contest may not make another. Even if the selection process appears to be the same, other factors come into play. For example, Otakon had a different judging committee. I kinda miss the days when the videos went "on tour" across the east coast, and everyone was invited to participate in judging. That created a larger, more statistically significant sample, and the one year that I made it into the finals under that rule, I felt so honored, even though I only ended up winning honorable mention in my category.

I think it's also important to note how picky TaranT seems to be, not to mention that most of the videos that made the finals had something in them he didn't like. For example, video #44, "DPO", was one of my favorite comedy videos and made the finals, but TaranT's only comment was, "whatever."

Then again, a lot of videos that I liked didn't make the finals, either. We can't all be right 100% of the time....

WHA?!
Not to worry. I am developing an algorithm that will read the beats in a song's waveform, then automatically generate a typical Naruto video by randomly grabbing clips and timing them to those beats. The only bug I've come across is that it continues to reject Linkin Park songs. I guess that horse really has been beaten to death....

Feel like I need to have seen the anime to understand this one.
You haven't seen Death Note or heard of the premise ? You've been under a rock for the past two years. :P
