Expectations

Post by Niotex » Wed Sep 17, 2008 12:17 am

What are your expectations of yourself and others compared to your past, present, and future works? Are those expectations justified or misplaced? Do they overwhelm you? And how do you think others perceive you and your work? How does that make you feel?

So many questions so little time.

To still have fun. I do not try hard to pick up awards. I do not try to pander. I edit the same way I did in 2000, and I have no wish to change it.
Are those expectations justified or misplaced?

The moment this stops being fun is the moment I retire.
Do they overwhelm you?

Sometimes. We all crave attention. Sometimes my view of where I fit in doesn't jive with external pressures.
And how do you think others perceive you and your work?
That I am old and obsolete. A relic of another era. Sometimes I feel entirely invisible, as if I were just a total non-entity, despite how long I have been around and how often I go out of my way to be one of the most active members of the community.
How does that make you feel?
Honestly? I oscillate between not caring, to caring quite a bit. As stated, we all crave attention, and sometimes it can be quite depressing if I never receive any recognition at all.

As with everyone (as far as I can tell), every video of mine is constantly compared to my previous ones. So I try to do things different, vary up styles (editing, music, anime) in an effort to keep the comparisons to a minimum. There's usually one "big" video that everyone keeps saying "WTF, this isn't *blank*". It changes sometimes, but usually my whole editing style is defined by those few videos. I have DOZENS of videos, forty something, I believe, and they are all across the board, due to my constant need to prove to myself that I can change my editing style.

Then, of course, there's the times when I don't really pay attention and edit however I want, repeating overused themes/songs/anime to my heart's content because, damnit, editing is fun!

I expect others to suck. I expect myself to suck but half the time it's intentional so that's all right.
Are those expectations justified or misplaced?
Oh they're quite justified. Despite having such low expectations of everyone I still find it's rather rare anyone manages to meet much less surpass my expectations.
And how do you think others perceive you and your work? How does that make you feel?
I believe the word 'asshual' is appropriate here. And I'm proud of it.

So many questions so little time.
What are your expectations of yourself and others compared to your past, present, and future works?
My works... Well most of my vids toped the previous ones with popularity and stuff. Well who cares? However I do expect my next release to top the other ones, just for the sake that I think it is my best. I can´t really care that much about it, because it´s stuff that I like and is more or less my special taste. On the other hand my special taste seamed to have worked in the past. I can only be curious about viewer reactions :P
I expect from my project that they please me at the end. I always want to try new stuff out. In the past it mattered to get better with every video, but I think that´s not that much important for me now.

If I don´t know previous works I just expect most of the time stuff that I won´t like from other editors.

Are those expectations justified or misplaced?
Yeah this is kindy misplaced, but it´s also justified. Let´s be honest now: You get often dissapointed and just not entertained from a lot of videos. It´s kinda mean to think such things from new editors, but for god´s sake: I don´t like to waste time and bandwith for nonsense. Other people just have to understand people like me here. Although I lowered my bar for others videos and I do find fun in other ones stuff.

Do they overwhelm you?
Somehow.

And how do you think others perceive you and your work?
The expect the bauzi-like videos from me. I don´t know. People say that my videos have a remarkable style. Well I guess that´s the kind of stuff they expect. It´s ok for me if they don´t care to much for it. I dislike it that they expect stuff like my "Different Realities" vid. It´s not that I don´t like the video, but the style and editing doesn´t suite me that much today and lead expectations into a direction that I don´t really want.
However I want to be free to edit everything that I want.

How does that make you feel?
It was some kind of pressure, but today it makes me think more about the stuff that I´m doing. I won´t sell myself for some clicks and opinions. That´s really not want I want to do.

haha I wasn't really commenting on your post d:
(somehow I just after I pressed submit, I realized you would take it that way..
I was typing out my response and well it started getting really long and I felt it would be better posted in my livejournal (which by the way I posted it there)... so I was talking about my would-be-post.

By the way Ileia sums up my thoughts fairly well
