GPU accelerated AVC decoding

Post by Jnzk » Sat Sep 13, 2008 2:04 pm

New version of DGAVCIndex supports GPU decoding on Nvidia cards.

I haven't tested it yet, but it sure sounds hawt. :o

Oh sure, right after I go ATI. Well actually I'm more interested in GPU encoding, but I suppose GPU decoding is great for older CPUs/home theater PCs.

The problem with Badaboom and other retail software is the lack of precise control. Also, CUDA isn't specific to Nvidia. What's funny is Nvidia said they'd support it, but AMD wouldn't. CUDA on Radeon (PDF) Give me GPU support for x264 with MEgui or give me death!

did some research and people have been using GeForce 8 series cards as an addon to their ATI cards for CUDA support. Apparently it works in XP and non 64bit Vista.

If I wasn't in the hole financially I would go buy a $40 8400 right now and try it out but, I can't. Hopefully I that will change next week (crosses fingers). You'll also need to have another PCI Express 16x slot open or mod the card to it will work in a 1x. Need to research that also... but for $40, that's not too bad for cheap hardware acceleration IMO. And it will only get cheaper :P

He released the decode DLL. I ended up going out and buying a 8400gs at frys (with the intent to return it soon >.> I also got paid for some past work so I can actually afford it if I want to keep it) and tested it out. I'm doing a simple resize to 640x360 in vdub and encoding to mjpeg. With the regular DGAVCDecode i am getting ~14fps. With DGAVCDecodeNV I'm getting ~24fps. A whole 10fps increase, that's awesome :o

Unfortunately seeking seems just as slow though so it's still a pain to use in premiere :\

At the very least it allows for a cheaper box to be built for a pure "media center" purpose. If we hadn't already built all the systems we're using for video rooms at AAC i'd have put this into the equation.
