Kev, I'm losing my faith in your taste in music. Kill perhaps the greatest musician of the 20th century? (no, I'm not exaggarating - look through his broader catalogue rather than popularly-known work, and you'll see)

Suit yourself.

It's easy to think of Zappa as a comedy-musician who made his living making songs about farts and anal sex, but what's easy not to see beneath that is a first-rate, unique guitarist with unparalleled improvisational talent, a multi-genre, multi-instrument ability of the highest order, and then his work as a composer. Zappa is probably the only 20th century musician who has been both acknowledged in the world of rock music and in the world of 'high' (i.e. academic) music, and has probably advanced and influenced all directions of modern music we have today, directly or indirectly. He's also had a huge influence on the way music is recorded, produced and mastered today, and raised a whole generation of musicians who played with him and then went out to spread that influence. I dare to suggest there's not a single good musician today who's not been influenced by Zappa, even if they don't know it. Then there's also his anti-censorship political activism, which only makes me admire the guy more and more. It's a shame he died at what should have been the peak of his creative career.

Well, there's my rant for this otherwise non-discussive thread :amv:

Help me out here, did he ever make something that wasn't about farts? Cause I was skipping through his discography until I had about 50 plays and it was all about farts. I can't enjoy music for the technical facts that the guy influenced a lot of people when it's just music about farts.

No really, because you know people can fill a whole book that's just about how influential and awesome The Beatles were, but they are still just overrated pop in the end (+weak attempts at psychedelic rock). So name me some of the hidden records of Zappa that show his amazing talents please.

Um, there are multiple box sets of Zappa's instrumental guitar work, live improvisation and orchestral music. Something like "Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar", "Jazz From Hell" and "The Yellow Shark" are good examples of his instrumental albums from the three aforementioned streams.

Aside from that, even in the non-fart-free catalogue, I dare say there's a lot of good stuff that's easy to miss if you're just concentrating on the farts. Which is precisely what Zappa is trying to do anyway. Joke's on you if you get tripped up on it
