Is anime a "lonely" hobby?

Post by johnny46 » Thu Mar 19, 2009 9:19 pm

Aside from having other fans you can talk to online, does being an anime fan sometimes feel a little lonely? Anime seems to be a very unpopular hobby among many people who aren't fans, and I was wondering how you guys felt about that.

I guess being a fan, it can get pretty lonely. I don't have friends that are fans, so it's impossible for me to talk them about the latest anime I'm watching (because to them, all anime is weird).

But I do visit message boards, so that helps wash away that feeling. Smile

I went to a college with an anime club.

It's only a lonely hobby if you want it to be.

Emos don't know shit bout loneliness when you've got no other nerd friends.

And it's always good to bring a friend to the Japanese-y side of life.

Yea, I know one other person that likes anime, and that's my cousin. 150 miles away. But whatever; I manage.

Anime seems to be a very unpopular hobby among many people who aren't fans,
You could replace "anime" with any other hobby in the world and this sentence would be true, all the same. Of course something is not going to be popular among people who are not interested.

Any hobby can be lonely, but one: a hobby is something you do because you, yourself, enjoy it. Two: Finding friends to share a hobby with is the same as finding any other friend. You talk to someone and introduce the topic, them taking interest is completely up to them. However, that should not stop you from trying to introduce them to it in the first place. If you find someone already into anime, who you can make friends with. Kudos. Though this entirely relies on you putting yourself out there and actually looking for like-minded individuals.

I have a younger sister who's into anime, though she only watches and reads shoujo-type stuff. I have someone to ramble to, and so does she; so as an anime fan, I wouldn't say I'm lonely. (I also have a younger brother who used to be into anime, but I think my own nerdiness drove him away from it. :p )

To be brief: I talk about anime like any other hobby I have. It's not something I feel singled-out by.
Everything came from nothing, therefore everything is nothing.

There's nothing to worry about.

My boyfriend hadn't encountered much anime before meeting me but now I'm taking him through all of The Slayers and for a change of pace Ranma 1/2 as well :3

Anime is a hobby that is meant to be shared. CONVERT! CONVERT! Everytime I have a friend that hasn't seen anime I bring out the Slayers and watch it through.
