My gf has some video issues. She has vista. Anyhow, she is unable to play rmvb and avi files for some odd reasons. So far I've made her try it on:
Real Media Player
Media Player Classic
Real Alternative
VLC Player
I've also made her download the K-lite full package
Before she did it though, it kept saying that her avi file was broken, but now it doesn't say anything at all. Now she only gets a black screen.
I thought real media player and real alternative was suppose to be able to play it? I'm confused, I play it easily on my pc so I don't know what's wrong with hers.
Someone help, thank you.

I have a [somewhat] lengthy rant about K-lite...but I'll spare you that.
Suffice it to say K-lite is a nightmare. I don't have any experience with the vista media codec pack, but it seems that it's alright and should have done the trick
It is weird that VLC isn't able to play .avi files (haven't tried it with .rmvb)...no idea as to the cause though.
Vista media codec pack says it uninstalls any other codec pack...but you may want to check the add/remove programs list to see if K-lite is still lingering. CCCP has served me well for the past few years, so you may consider giving that a shot (though the core of CCCP and the vista media codec pack appear to be the same [ffdshow])
for .rmvb and .rm files I have real alternative
if all else fails, blame vista

Re: Video Playing Issue, Need Help Please.
I'm having trouble playing anything in Quicktime. The audio is just fine but the video freezes up and I have the same problem in my iTunes. Made watching Dr. Horrible's Sing a Long Blog a nightmare. iTunes support was no help. I tried downloading all the updates and I ran the trouble shooting programs but they don't help. I used to be able to watch several AMV's that I've had for years just fine in Quicktime, but now it's shot. Any ideas?

.rmv* files are "special encodes" and "Real Alternative Player" is designed specifically for that file;
much the same as .viv* files are only played with Plug-in adapters. ( pre-Y2K files )
. the encoders are still on some peoples computers but, that doesn't mean that the players "ARE"
still available to play those videos!
someday, maybe next year even, files like .vob .avi .ogm and .mp4 will all be unplayable files because
something better came along and the CODEC's for the files we use today will have been lost to
the achieves of the Computers History.
not surprisingly, I believe you 100%Lil'MissSunshine wrote:.. trouble playing anything in Quicktime .. the video freezes up and I have the same problem in my iTunes ...
the QT packaging never was designed for "alterations" to its CODEC design. formats like .mp4 and
.mov are no longer QuickTime's creation.
. as time goes by, many improvements take place. quite often even companies like Sorenson make
improvements without telling Apple about the updates and QT players are out-of-date within a
month of its newest releases. Don't worry about things being out-of-date, be very
aware of updates that are "nothing-but-HACK's!" ( "Angel Potion" )
. if the file is properly encoded, with the exception of .mov files, your i-Tunes stuff should play
with VLC Player. Windows Media Player was never designed to play .mp4 files therefor, don't expect
it to know what CODEC to download if it doesn't know which codec to ask for ^_^ - hehe
