Re: AMVs and Funimation's Copyright enforcment comments
I also saw this discussion in a very positive light. It's mostly been covered already, but it's good to know that the domestic anime industry, right up to their infringement enforcement arms, see AMVs the way most of us see them; Fan made commercials as opposed to dastardly piracy. In fact, a combination of some of the recent videos I've been watching and the good mood this information has put me in, I shelled out for a new box set yesterday. Everybody wins!

I think that the American license being talked about is the "ASCAP".

You can find an ascap license in every jukebox as well. Or at least you BETTER.

Well I'm wondering how they know who to pay the money to? You guys give them a list of all the songs or something?Vlad G Pohnert wrote:According to SOCAN (IN Canada), something like 85% of all fees collected went to the artists.Zarxrax wrote:Does anyone know if any artists ever actually see any money from the fees that cons pay? Nope, as far as I'm told, all the revenue is distrubuted amongst the all the member... But liek I said, I don't know the details... But I suppose it's like asking of a con does all the money go back into the con or is someone keeping some of it and not telling...

People who have never worked with musicians or been involved in video screenings need to learn this phrase: "Public Performance Rights"Eva-Fan wrote:Are you serious?! That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Depending how they are performing or playing things affects the type of license. The money is paid to ASCAP many licenses would not go into specific since they would be purchases as a blanket use of stuff for a few days and I'm sure something like this is cheaper for educational or non-profit orgs. How ASCAP re-imburses their members is up to them. It's all big corpate shit now. How individual artists get re-imbursed would depend on their contract with their label.Zarxrax wrote:Well I'm wondering how they know who to pay the money to? As far as the original post I don't see anything new in there. I mean that's been pretty much common knowledge to me since day 1. The JP companies would be the only ones with the authority to shut us down for video use in almost all cases. Given their track record with international markets they aren't even paying attention. JP MAD creators have more to worry about than us on that front.
We on the other hand HAVE seen USA music labels go after specific videos (Goldenboy-Peach) or entire artist lines (Evanescene or one of those newer popular bands here at the org right?)

Can you just be a member and just not do anything :/ that's the AMERICAN way.
/might look into getting a license to ASCAP

Obviously this isn't a legal brief. But I'm assuming this guy knows what he's talking about; I am also under the impression that he would use precise words. (You don't need to be verbose, or even obtuse, to be precise.) So if he's trying to clearly communicate ideas, why would he use ambiguous terminology?godix wrote: Come on trythil, you aren't dumb. You know he was trying to get across ideas rather than a legal brief. Most people can easily understand his meanings even if he didn't use the correct legal terms.
Re: Vlad's advice: You are/were a mechanical engineer, right? (The most recent bio I read of you stated that; it could be out of date.) You understand the value in prodding at things, looking for leaks. There's nothing wrong with applying that to life.

yeah neither is stress right? Bottom line, life and work are two different matters. Treat them differently and the stress from your job won't follow (as much).
BTW the first part is sarcasm, stressing out over jobs is good, stressing out over life is bad. Just saying you can't treat them the same all the time.
