Katawa Shoujo (Visual Novel)

Post by Ishbalan » Thu May 14, 2009 5:48 pm

From the minds of Anon, Four Leaf Studios brings you Katawa Shoujo, which translates to "Crippled Girl."

Synopsis:
Set in the fictional Yamaku High School for disabled children, located somewhere in modern Japan. Hisao Nakai, a normal boy living a normal life, has his life turned upside down when a congenital heart defect forces him to move to a new school after a long hospitalization. Despite his difficulties, Hisao is able to find friends—and perhaps love, if he plays his cards right.

The gameplay of Katawa Shoujo is choice-based, with the player reading through text and occasionally making decisions that impact events or dialogue within the story. The goal of the game is to make certain right choices that will advance a relationship with one or more of the heroines and enable the viewing of erotic scenes.

In this game, you meet five special girls, each with a unique disability and lots of character.

Emi Ibarazaki

Image

Birthday: March 14
Zodiac: Pisces
Blood Type: B
Height: 142 cm
Weight: 41 kg
Bust/Waist/Hips: 70/51/74
Hair: Light Brown
Eyes: Forest Green
Despite being left with legs amputated below the knee, Emi is perhaps one of the most cheery, happy-go-lucky girls on the entire globe, let alone the school. Not one to be left in despair even after the accident that claimed her legs, Emi views her disability more as a blessing, her prosthetic legs having brought her to the heights of her ability on the track team rather than becoming a permanent obstacle.

Hanako Ikezawa

Image

Birthday: July 10
Zodiac: Cancer
Blood Type: AB
Height: 164 cm
Weight: 52 kg
Bust/Waist/Hips: 86/56/84
Hair: Purple
Eyes: Grey Purple
At a young age, Hanako had a traumatic experience that left her life in shambles. Her father died when their home burned down in an accident, which also disfigured Hanako herself permanently. She is reclusive to the extreme, shunning from all other people to the point of actually panicking from any social contact. Her only trusted friend is Lilly, who has taken Hanako under her wing ever since the two were introduced to each other.

Lilly Satou

Image

Birthday: June 27
Zodiac: Cancer
Blood Type: A
Height: 171 cm
Weight: 59 kg
Bust/Waist/Hips: 89/61/89
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Blue
Blind since birth, Lilly is caring, responsible and friendly - the perfect foil to Hanako, her best friend, whom she shares an almost mother-daughter relationship with, in addition to her free time often being spent drinking tea alongside her companion. In class she is a diligent student, with her sense of confidence serving her well in her role as class representative of class 3-2.

Rin Tezuka

Image

Birthday: March 13
Zodiac: Pisces
Blood Type: AB
Height: 161 cm
Weight: 50 kg
Bust/Waist/Hips: 83/54/78
Hair: Red
Eyes: Dark Green
Since Rin’s arms are tiny stumps due to a severe birth defect and subsequent surgery, she uses her feet and occasionally her mouth to do everything, which includes painting. Because of her disability, using skirts is tough, so Rin is wearing a boy’s uniform at school. Her creativity is matched by her philosophical streak: Rin is fond of occasionally getting lost in thought and giving voice to abstract ideas about man, the universe, and other things that thoroughly confuse people.

Shizune Hakamichi

Image

Birthday: May 6
Zodiac: Taurus
Blood Type: O
Height: 158 cm
Weight: 53 kg
Bust/Waist/Hips: 88/52/85
Hair: Dark Blue
Eyes: Blue
Strong willed and forceful, Shizune is definitely the leader type. She’s been the class rep, despite being deaf and mute, for as long as her class has had one, and generally takes charge in just about any situation she’s placed in. Shizune is known around the school as a fearsome taskmaster, and skilled manipulator, but also as a fair and just leader.

You may be thinking, "Oh you sick fuck!" but please try to keep an open mind. The disabled are human, just like us, and they deserve a chance at love just as much as we do.
Don't you agree?

Looks interesting, I'll give it a try sometime, but for now I have to clear through my oversized collection of VNs (I really have too many).

Blind girl can't judge you by your looks.
Deaf-mutes won't ramble on for hours.
No legs means easier access.
Blind girl is extra sensitive to touch. Will use hands more.
No arms means more talented mouth.
Etc etc.

Just getting those comments out of the way.

Im also taking a survey at school to see who is most preferred. Most people preferred the blind girl immediately, but switched to the burn-victim after seeing the pictures. On the condition that she keeps her hair that way, that is.
No one chose No Arms. :(

For me, Im crossed between the No Legs girl and the Deaf-mute. I just got the demo and maybe I'll have an educated opinion after playing for a bit.

Everyone has their tastes. I can counter-criticize anyone who says I'm too much of a weeaboo. The important thing is to be comfortable with the way you are and don't be embarassed to show your nature to others. That sort of comfort is important for relieving stress in social interactions and breaking down barriers in building meaningful relationships. Just be yourself. Lying your way through life is no way to live.

Besides, I love seeing people's initial reactions to the concept of an H-Game with disabled people. I love making people feel awkward. :D
Want something really fun to do? Drink from your co-workers' cups when you're at work. Their reactions are priceless.

There is a large distinction between not saying something and lying. For example, people who are into /d/ shit don't always walk around IRL talking about their interests in it. Same applies to this, you don't have to lie, but some things just don't require flashing it about in public. I hope you understand the difference. Just my two cents.

And after dragging this topic off-track, it would only be fair I re-establish it on due course.

I was following this briefly in it's latter stages, though I wasn't too excited for the release of Act 1. I've downloaded the demo but put off playing it due to being too busy, but the general reaction to it has been divided between those who hail it as a masterpiece and those who laugh at it's existence. I'm still on the fence about this and will be until I finish playing it, but given that it was made by an unpaid, amateur western team formed from about 20 people, I think it's good to see some original content of this nature.

On another note, what do you guys think about the art? I like kekekeke as an artist, but it was his decision to drop and I'd think it was too large of a burden for one single artist any way. The new artists aren't great, but they're not bad either. I've seen much worse from some japanese artists.
