CD drive problem?

Post by Hagaren Viper » Sun May 10, 2009 11:49 pm

This is completely relevant because I want to burn AMVs to data disks and I have nowhere else to ask. Yes.

I'm not sure what the problem is here...I thought my CD/DVD drive sorta died a while back, because I could not burn anything to disk. Nothing at all. But I recently borrowed a portable CD drive....and I can't get it to work either. I even managed to get a brand new one for free....but nothing. Every time I try to put anything onto a cd or dvd, I get this error.
Spoiler :

It doesn't matter if I'm trying to burn a video or a photo, I get the same error every time. If I hit retry, it just pops up again right away. I really need to get some stuff burned, as I don't have the money for an external and won't any time soon. I'm kinda at my wit's end, anyone have any idea whats wrong?

This is what I could find from Microsoft and it might not apply to you. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892346

The common reason for that error message is because there is insufficient space on the CD or DVD, but I'm assuming that's not the case here. It seems like it's not hardware related since the portable drive and the new drive also didn't work.

The only other reason is that you don't have enough space on your C: drive or primary Windows installation partition to use as a temporary store location. This is related to the issue I linked to at the top, but at a more basic level. And if this was the case, you'd have more issues than just this.

You aren't trying to drag and drop onto a DVD are you? I know Windows XP can't do that.

And yea, I know the drive is called "CD Drive," but still....it's saying you have 0 bytes free on the CD/DVD.

I'm running Windows HP, and if anything, it USED to let me drag and drop. And it says there's no free room no matter what disk I use too, even if they are brand new DVDs. :/

I'm going to be looking into the link Willen gave me, thanks for the help so far.

Can you confirm that the portable drives actually burners (all you said was "CD Drive")?

Um. Good question. I think I've been playing too much Pokemon.

Yes I can, it says on the box of one of them (I'm borrowing the other drive, but I'm 99% it's a burner anyway).

I've been really busy lately, so I still haven't given that site a check yet.

Well, I'll assume you're on Windows XP then, in which case you can't drag-n-drop to a DVD. Windows XP is only capable of directly burning to a CD.

If you want to burn a DVD, you'll have to get a separate program to do it.
