Re: TheAX AMV Contest 2009 Finalists are...
I guess I was late on getting the word.
Happy to see that myself and Vlad made this year, albeit different categories. =)
Best of luck to all the finalists and let's hope for an exciting contest this year. I'll be there with bells on (and Miku headphones... and everything else...)
See you guys there!

Honestly I really liked the Nokia venue. Made an interesting change of things and was awsome to see videos on it. My video may not have made it in that year but it was nice to at least see it on a screen in a theater like that. The only annoyance admittedly is the hightened security for it but whatever.

Eh? Never even heard of it. Hmm... I think I recall what part of the vid it was though, if I remember correctly.Melichan923 wrote:Yay! You won't regret watching Kanon. ^_^xstylus wrote:Seriously? I thought I saw snippets of the original Kanon in your vid. Then again, I've only seen just a couple of episodes of it, and have yet to see any of new Kanon... ...which I think now is probably a good time to rectify. Hm, I believe you are thinking of the parts with ONE: True Stories. The animation style is a little different on ONE (it's an older show).
I noted that your AMV had very good video quality except for this one part where edges got jaggy, and IIRC a brief subtitle even slipped in. I mistook those scenes as from the first Kanon, but was that actually ONE: True Stories? Cuz I... uh, kinda remember scoring you rather low in tech for that part. Subbed footage is a cardinal sin in my book, no matter how good a video is.

It'll be very Anaheim'ish (in my opinion). I just think of it as goin' back to our roots a bit.DigitalPanther wrote:I agree with Brad that the sound won't be quite as nice as it was in Nokia last year (what with its custom tuned and specced for that venue that was specifically built for such things) but we are working with what we have to do the best we can. It won't be perfect but we will do the very best we can I promise you that.

I remember the room, good size. My question is how are they going to do the waiting line (not that I'll be in it, with a creator's ticket) since that room is pretty much right there at the front of the center.

o.o I did not use ANY fansubbed material for that video. I think you are mixing mine up with someone else's. I spent really long on the quality for my video and I definitely didn't use any fansubbed footage, so I'm really anxious to know what went wrong during playback if it was my AMV (jagged edges?). *Paces nervously* Oh, I hope I didn't mess up the encoding for Expo somehow! *Facepalm*xstylus wrote:Eh? Edit - This is ONE: True Stories. A screenshot from my AMV:

I thoroughly enjoyed the Anaheim setup, it was actually quiet perfect so I can't wait to see how it would be this year now that you put it that way.xstylus wrote:It'll be very Anaheim'ish. Hmm. Now that I think about it, I think you're right on there not being subs otherwise I'd have been more savage on your tech score, and I recall I was pretty lenient. I utterly trash the tech scores on vids with subs or divx logos whether I like them or not, and I know I didn't do so for yours. However, I do clearly recall that there was one part of your video near the middle that had footage with jagged edges. I even groaned out loud because everything was so perfect otherwise!Melichan923 wrote: o.o I did not use ANY fansubbed material for that video. I think you are mixing mine up with someone else's. I gave you maximum marks (5) on all other criteria (plus a bonus point), but I think I gave you a two or a three on tech, and it hurt to do so. By no means a fatal score at all, but in the drama category every point helps.
Again, that was just my judging. Can't speak for the other judges on what scores they gave you.

Re: TheAX AMV Contest 2009 Finalists are...
Hmmm! I wonder what part the jagged lines were at. *Scratches head* Do you mind if I send you an early encode of my video so you can point out where it possibly was? That way, I can fix it if needed (You don't have to by all means, it's mostly because I am very curious!). I checked the resized HuffYUV file that I sent to AX. It was resized from 848x480 to letterboxed 720x480 to be put in a 4:3 display. There is a scene with slight aliasing in the resized HuffYUV version, but I'm not sure if that is the part that you are talking about. It does not show up on the MPEG I sent or original HuffYUV though. Maybe it has something to do with the resize method I chose. I'm going to test out different methods this week.xstylus wrote:Hmm. Really? Thank you! I appreciate your feedback. It's good to know these things - I never noticed anything wrong with the encode before and I watch each conversion twice before sending to a con. I'll look even more closely next time. I'm honestly hoping it was a fluke of some sorts and I didn't miss something that someone could notice so easily.
